Why We Love The Island of Sea Women

A powerful story of love and loss

Like her earlier bestselling novels The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Island of Sea Women transports readers through time and across the Pacific—only this time to the island of Jeju, off the coast of Korea. Mi-ja and Young-sook join their all-female diving collective as teenagers, and though they are taught how to survive the perils of their dangerous jobs at sea, they are unprepared for the shockwaves that hit Jeju and Korea soon after: the colonial occupation of Korea by Japan; WWII; civil war and the separation of Korea into North and South; and the American occupation. Against a harrowing, heartbreaking backdrop, Mi-ja and Young-sook make their way in the world; they marry and bear children; and while they and their families are tested in unimaginable ways, this is, in the end, a hopeful novel about freedom and resilience.

Lisa See on The Island of Sea Women

“About ten years ago, I was waiting for what seemed like forever to be called in to see my doctor. Like most of us in that situation, I started leafing through magazines to kill time. I came across a tiny article about the diving women of Jeju. It was just one paragraph and a single two-by-two-inch photo of an older woman, her features squeezed by the facial opening in her wet suit, grinning, and proudly holding up her catch. I tore the page out of the magazine—yes, I’m one of those people—and tucked it in my purse. The idea of the haenyeo fascinated me, and I knew that one day I’d write about them.”

THE B&N BOOK CLUB

What does any reader (especially a bookseller) love more than reading or recommending books?

Simple: Talking about books with another reader. The Island of Sea Women is the third selection of our Barnes & Noble Book Club for 2019. At our stores across the country, readers will come together to discuss this compelling story—some bringing friends and family with them, others making new friends—as they ask, What would you have done?

Our B&N Book Club is Now Monthly!

We all had so much fun talking books together at our first three book club nights in 2018—so much so that customers and booksellers kept asking for more, and now we’re bringing the Barnes & Noble Book Club to readers everywhere every month. That’s not our only big news: We’ll not only tell you what the next month’s selection will be at the end of every book club night, we’ll also give away one copy of that next selection at the same time.
