This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. Charlton Heston did a marvelous job portraying General Gordon. Lawrence Olivier and Ralph Richardson were excellent as well as was Richard Johnson. The battle scenes are extremely well done as well. Nevertheless there are some inaccuracies in the movie. First, General Gordon was a very high strung chain smoking individual- which Heston does not portray him as in the move. Second, General Gordon and the Mahdi never actually met face to face yet in the movie they do. Finally, I do not believe that the movie does an adequate job of portraying just how bad things were in Khartoum during the Mahdist seige of the city and how important Gordon's flotilla of river boats were in taking the battle to the beseigers. Nevertheless, I believe that this is still a great movie and I believe that it is Heston's finest role (I would put it ahead of his acting in Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments).
