In 1859 near Galveston, Texas, Drummond Roak misses Sage McMurray who left Whispering Mountain Ranch three years ago to attend medical school in Boston. Sage is a widow who plans to open a medical practice in Texas. In Galveston, Sage saves a dog only to have Drum save her and the dog from a wagon. He yells at her and realizes with her look she still sees him as the worthless son of an outlaw and his hooker. Though she is three years older, he reminds himself of his vow that she will be his woman. Sage mourns the loss of her spouse Baret who was a mentor not a husband to her. He told her as he was dying he married her because he admired her courage and feared dying alone. They never slept together. Baret's slimy brother Shelley pays his respects to the widow, who is uncomfortable with the wastrel. Drum travels with the Texas Rangers; his assignment to kill the leaders of a raider group attacking an English family. He completes his mission and takes the dying mother and her two young children to town for Sage to provide medical help; their father is dead. The woman says they were not raiders, but a killer who wants the family dead; her sons are not safe. Sage vows to keep the children safe while Drum vows to keep her safe. The super relationship between the lead couple is refreshing and unique while a secondary romance is also terrific. Although Sage's denial of her feelings towards Drummond turns repetitive, fans will enjoy the fourth Whispering Mountain (see TALL DARK AND TEXAN , TEXAS PRINCESS and TEXAS RAIN). Harriet Klausner

Fans of the Whispering Mountain series on the McMurray brothers will be delighted with the long awaited story of their sister, Sage. If you haven't read the series, don't worry; this one is a good place to start. The dirty kid called Drum has grown up into hunky Texas Ranger, but Sage is not easily convinced he's the one for her. It takes kissing, rescuing when she is kidnapped, and more steamy kissing. Nonstop action with laugh outloud moments. If you are a fan of western historical romance, add this to your library.

Another great story by Jodi Thomas. I so loved this series and was extremely happy with the story of Sage and Roak! It was great from start to finish. Would recommend for any who love these kinds of love stories. I love the wild west and how she makes you feel like your there. Another wonderful story in the series!

Drummond Roak, the title character in author Jodi Thomas' "The Lone Texan", is a man determined to win the heart of the contrary, fiery, and beautiful woman whom he has loved since he was fifteen years old. That woman is Sage McMurray, slightly older than Drum, and newly returned to Texas from a five-year stay in Boston, MA. During that time, Sage fulfilled her dream of becoming a doctor. She also married and soon became the widow of her much-older mentor. Accompanying Sage as her nurse and assistant is Bonnie Pierce, a tall, plain spinster. When Drum hears that Sage has returned, he seeks her out, and they have an eventful reunion which is made even more complex when Sage is kidnapped by a villain who is pure evil. Drum comes to her rescue, by being the highest bidder for her at an outlaw's auction, and the sparks between the two really start to fly! "The Lone Texan" has a great hero whom we get to know in-depth by his personal thoughts and his love for his one and only woman, who takes a mighty heap of convincing before her heart is truly won. There is also a very sweet and satisfying story of wall-flower Bonnie coming into full bloom with a rescue romance of her own! The characters of Sage and Drum became known in other entries in Jodi Thomas' "Whispering Mountain" series, and at last they have their own wonderful western romance!

if you have followed this series, you will recognize drummond roak. when we first met drum, he stated that sage mcmurray would be his woman some day. well, here is the day. independent sage has returned from boston where she earned her doctor's certificate. on her way home she is kidnapped by some notorious outlaws. their leader is ill and needs a doctor. drum learns of her being held captive in their lair, and forms a plan to get her out alive. she is to be auctioned off for the night to the highest bidder. drum infiltrates the gang and wins the bid. instead of bedding her he takes her oout of there. this is an action packed romance, with drum keeping her safe as best he can.

I did read this whole series and was rooting for this couple the whole time. Sage and Drum had danced around each other the whole time and it was such a great dance to watch. I actually recommed reading the first 3 books first to understand Drum better. Sage is easily understood if you only can read this one, but Drum, like most men is more complicated than her.

Persistence pays off. No matter how many time Sage tells Drummond to go away he keeps coming back. Which is a good thing because he has to keep saving her life in the bargain. Sage eventually gets it and follows her destiny. Which is Drummond of course. But she makes him work for it. That part can be a little tiresome at times but its still such a good story you'll be glad you read it.. And you'll love the surprise romance of another couple. Read it and find out for yourself.
