This is my first story by Tolstoy and as a previous reviewer said it is thought provoking. I could not put this short story down. Amazing how he got into the mind of the men at the end of their lives and showed heir happiness and regret.

Great free short shory and my first read by this particular author. This short story brings the reader the insight between a rich power hungry master and a dedicated poor servant. What is typical in relation to the "I am better than you" mindset by the master, takes an interesting twist due to a snowstorm. Derek D

I read this short story this morning to pass some time and after finishing, I haven't thought much about it since. It was nice to see the rich, greedy idiot "master" seem to accept his wrongdoings just before dying, but meh, what good does it do then? Glad Nikita survived the cold, though. When I first thought that both the men and the horse, too, had succumbed to the cold, I thought to myself "seriously? this is lame." Even so, after the peasants found them the next morning and found Nikita alive, the rest of Nikita's life passes by in just a few short paragraphs. All in all, I wasn't too impressed with this short story. I gave it two stars.
