Overview

Music fans can't be blamed for their skepticism when an actor cuts an album. But they should be cautioned to check their cynicism at the door if that actor is film and television star Peter Gallagher, who went from singing a Solomon Burke song on Fox's The O.C. to landing a record deal. Gifted with a rich tenor, Gallagher was smart to draw on the Stax/Volt songbook for inspiration and then cut his album at Ardent Studios, where he was aided by legends like Booker T. & the MGs guitarist Steve Cropper and soul siren Betty Wright. Using a laid-back sense of phrasing, the native New Yorker plays Rufus Thomas to Teressa James's Carla Thomas in a faithful re-creation of the duo's "When You Move You Lose" that rings with the punchy cadence of the original. Gallagher is equally effective crooning his way through the Sam & Dave smash "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" and playing the part of the desperate cad at the heart of the Porter/Hayes classic "I've Got to Love Somebody's Baby." He even revisits the Burke nugget "Don't Give Up on Me," which led to this project. In addition to R&B staples, Gallagher smoothly mixes in fare from Lucinda Williams and Gary Moore. If The O.C. dims in popularity, Gallagher already has a great backup plan.
