A Child's Celebration of Soul

A Child's Celebration of Soul

CD

Overview

Music for Little People founder Leib Ostrow grew up in 1960s Detroit, where he was exposed to the full flowering of the Motown sound -- an incredibly energizing experience for the young Ostrow, who says the music made him want to "cry and laugh at the same time, but still feel good all over." Now he introduces classic soul music to a new generation via a vibrant collection of tunes. Beginning with Ike & Tina Turner's magnificent "Proud Mary," A Child's Celebration of Soul offers a cornucopia of styles and eras. There's the propulsive funk of James Brown's "Get on the Good Foot," the all-out dance fever of Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up," the bubblegum soul of the Jackson 5's exuberant "Rockin' Robin," the seasoned, hard-livin' vibe of Otis Redding's "Chain Gang," the blue-eyed soul of the Rascals' "It's a Beautiful Morning," and the signature song of the queen of soul herself, Aretha Franklin's "Respect." Music for Little People mainstays Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir offer a contemporary take on "Name Game," and folk-blues giant Taj Mahal does a sinuous, hip-hop-laced cover of Sly Stone's ode to tolerance and inclusion, "Everyday People," with its disarming snatches of playground song. If you're looking for a little bit of soul for your kids, this Celebration's a good place to start.
