A Christmas to Remember

A Christmas to Remember

by Amy Grant

In many artists' hands, Christmas albums seem a cynical marketing ploy. Not so with Amy Grant, the most successful Christian vocalist of the last two decades. A Christmas to Remember displays the sincerity and variety that has made her annual "Tennessee Christmas" concerts so successful. Several selections ("Silent Night," "Angus Dei") have the strong devotional bent one might expect, while others ("Christmas to Remember," the lightly swinging "Christmas Can't Be Very Far Away") celebrate family and tradition in more secular terms. "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Mr. Santa," a jazzy rewrite of "Mister Sandman," represent the season's lighter side, and the serene instrumentals "Highland Cathedral" and "Gabriel's Oboe" complete the package. Some may find the more contemporary numbers bland, but Grant sings warmly and tastefully throughout. This collection is sure to delight fans of Grant's similarly themed Home for Christmas (1992) and A Christmas Album (1983), or of well-crafted mainstream vocal music in general.

Amy Grant's third Christmas offering left me cold. I found it dull and unispired. The first two tracks were the best on the album - it's all downhill after that. Especially annoying are tracks 6 and 7 (''Jingle Bell Rock'' and ''Mister Santa'' respectively). I think I've listened to this album about three times since buying it in 1999. This is coming from a bonafide AG fan: buy her excellent 1983 ''A Christmas Album'' and 1992's release ''Home for Christmas'' and run far from this ''Christmas to [Forget]''

The title song is the weakest on the CD, ironically. Get past that, and you'll enjoy this CD. It boasts a good mix of songs to help celebrate the Christmas season.

This CD just arrived 2 days ago and I've already listened to it a dozen times! Amy's sweet voice in this wonderful collection of Christmas songs just completes the holiday for me! She sings some traditional songs and gives them a new lift and I love every one of the new holiday songs she has included as well! Highly recommended!

Amy's voice gets mellower and sweeter each year that passes by - the sensitivity and warmth she lends to this CD makes Christmas special. There are festive songs such as ''Jingle Bell Rock'' and ''Mister Santa''...and there are beautiful songs such as ''Welcome to Our World'' and ''A Christmas to Remember'' that reflect upon all that we are thankful for. Her voice is as wonderful as ever and this CD will NOT disappoint!
