One of the greatest albums in jazz history just got even better. John Coltrane’s magnum opus, A Love Supreme, is now fleshed out in this historic double CD with a rare 1956 live performance recorded in France, as well as the much-discussed but previously unissued version of “Acknowledgement” featuring saxophonist Archie Shepp and bassist Art Davis alongside Coltrane's quartet. Although the original studio performance of the suite remains as breathtaking as ever, the additional material adds greatly to our general appreciation of this masterpiece of modern music. Both in the studio and on the stage, the intensity and focus of Coltrane’s “Classic Quartet” with drummer Elvin Jones, pianist McCoy Tyner, and bassist Jimmy Garrison is always inspirational. The influence of this ensemble and the standard recording of A Love Supreme has remained undiminished for 37 years, and no contemporary jazz artist has yet been able to match Coltrane’s achievements.
