A Stranger Comes to Town

A Stranger Comes to Town

by Rod Van Wyngarden

The Van Duren girls were all very smart and good at sports. Haylie and Rachel were ten-year-old twins. Haylie was strong and could even beat up the boys if she wanted to. Rachel could think her way out of any situation. She was the all-city checkers champion, and could even play chess and beat grownups, something that no other kid in her grade could do. Kayla was only seven, but she was a quick thinker and could keep up with her sisters, both on their bikes and using her brain.

When the three of them team up to form a detective agency, no mystery stands a chance! As the sisters patrol the streets of Lake Alamo on their bikes, they're ready to take on any challenge. The Van Duren sisters solve mysteries of all kinds, from secret identities to stolen items to bullies, these sisters are ready to take it all on, one case at a time.

I knew from the time I began to read this book, that the students were going to love this book for read aloud during library.  They were hooked with the first chapter.  It was fun getting them to imagine the setting that took place years before even some of their parents were born. This book readily invited them to join the sisters in solving the mysteries.  They were excited to give their own reasoning behind the 'who done its'.   Mrs. K. Hager, Librarian Texas Christian School

I am a teacher at Coltrane Webb STEM Elementary and just completed A Stranger Comes to Town. I loved how Van Wyngarden set up the mysteries with girl detectives. Girls need to read in as many places as possible that they can be smart, active, and sweet all at the same time- they don't have to give up one quality to have another. The characters in the story serve as positive role models for young girls. I also like how each chapter presents a different mystery. For young readers, being able to read shorter chunks of text allos them to enjoy a mystery without becoming overwhelmed by a long, drawn-out plot. - S. Collins

This is a great read for Coltrane-Webb STEM Elementary students! The story line is believable with realistic characters and events. I think that our students will enjoy the suspense as they to try to predict what will happen next. D. Hamilton

The characters are very relatable and the storyline leaves the reader eager for more.

Three generations in my family read this treasure of a book. I picked it up and read it out of curiosity after my grade school age niece told me how much she liked it. Reading it brought back memories to me of the Nancy Drew books I read as a kid. Then my mother read it on my recommendation and she thought it was cute. This little book takes you back to those carefree days of childhood, and makes you happy that kids can share in those days yet today. A great read for lots of ages!

Really enjoyed this book. It's such a fun read. Not only did my younger relatives love it, but I did too. I loved the way this book is set up and the way it's written. I would definitely recommend it for children who say they don't like to read, or for those that lose interest in books easily!
