Shari Lapena’s new thriller, AN UNWANTED GUEST, is available now!

“Smart and suspenseful. . . you'll never see the ending coming.” —PureWow

In this neighborhood, danger lies close to home. A domestic thriller packed full of secrets, and a twisty story that never stops—from the bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

He looks at her, concerned. “How do you feel?” She wants to say,
Terrified. Instead, she says, with a faint smile, Glad to be home.

Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.

There's a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.

The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes.  Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.

Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won't stop asking questions.

Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

Karen, Brigid and Tom all have great roles. They each contribute to the murder in question. The question is who is to question???? All of them are not honest or truthful. Which leads to a series of bad choices. It's thrilling and nail biting.

Quick read. Good if you have nothing better at the moment. Personally I found all of the characters unlikable and unrealistic.

I really enjoyed Shari Lapena's The Couple Next Door so I was excited to see she had a new book out. Karen and Tom have been married a couple years. One day Tom comes home and Karen is gone, her car is gone, but her purse and phone are all left behind. She was also in the middle of making something in the kitchen and she randomly left in a hurry. Soon Tom finds out that Karen has been in a car accident and that she was driving recklessly in the worst part of town. In the hospital Karen remembers nothing of why she left in such a hurry. Then when Karen comes back from the hospital she notices little items are moving around in the house; someone is coming in their house when they are not there. This one was okay. The first part I was reading wondering what was going on. Karen doesn't have her memory so I was curious as to what was happening, what had made her leave in such a hurry. And then as you find out it's almost anticlimactic. It's oh, okay. And then even the twist at the very end. I don't know, I just wasn't blown away. The point of view would also change multiple times in a chapter and I'm not sure I like that. I don't mind multiple points of view, but when it changes so quickly and randomly it can get a bit confusing. It was still a good story, I just didn't enjoy it as much as the other book I have read by her.

Lots of twists and turns in this story, and the conclusion can be an ending or the opening of a sequel. A seemingly perfect couple's lives are suddenly put into an upheaval when Karen has a auto accident and she is left with no memory of why she was out driving and what caused the accident. Brilliant detectives are investigating a murder, and they are able to pinpoint the dead man's death to minutes before Karen's accident. The rest of the story keeps the reader going back and forth between believing Karen and then deciding she's full of it. Good read!

There is nothing complicated about this book at all, and for someone who is looking for a quick, easy read without doing much head scratching, this book will be just right. The writing is pretty straightforward and simple, and the story itself is the same. It's fairly typical of books in this genre; it checks off all the things that should be in a who-done-it, including some interesting surprises along the way. But, it's not particularly thought-provoking or memorable. Still, sometimes the reader just wants something pleasant to breeze through without much thought, which is why I say it's a good beach read--lazy, easy, mildly entertaining while you are reading it. It's rather like a piece of candy. Looks good, tastes good, over quickly, and then on to the next. And there is nothing wrong with that. Quick and easy is just fine sometimes. If that's what you are looking for, you'll enjoy it. Not every read has to be "Gone Girl" :)

Initially did not appreciate writing style, but plot more than kept me engaged. Eventually realized underlying logic. Conclusion totally unexpected & unpredictable. Great suspense author. Ann Hulyo

This could’ve been a really good book. However there was no background character development, and frankly I didn’t care about single one of the characters. The story itself was decent but overall it was a disappointment.
