Pulitzer Prize-winning historian John Toland’s classic, definitive biography of Adolf Hitler remains the most thorough, readable, accessible, and, as much as possible, objective account of the life of a man whose evil effect on the world in the twentieth century will always be felt.

Toland’s research provided one of the final opportunities for a historian to conduct personal interviews with over two hundred individuals intimately associated with Hitler. At a certain distance yet still with access to many of the people who enabled and who opposed the führer and his Third Reich, Toland strove to treat this life as if Hitler lived and died a hundred years before instead of within his own memory. From childhood and obscurity to his desperate end, Adolf Hitler emerges as, in Toland’s words, “far more complex and contradictory . . . obsessed by his dream of cleansing Europe Jews . . . a hybrid of Prometheus and Lucifer.”

I can not believe that there is a better book available that covers the second most written about man in human history -Adolph Hitler. His chronicled life shows not only his evil prejudices but also his normal side. Toland gives plausible reasons for Hitler's anti-Semitism. He exposes lies spread about Hitler such as his refusal to shake Jesse Owens hand after Owens' Olympic victory. Very good and surprisingly funny anecdotes are incorporated such as Hitler's crazy cousin spreading pamphlets claiming Hitler was part Jewish. It is a brilliantly researched book.

Even today in 2014 just the name Hitler stirs both revulsion and admiration. So much has been said, written, and filmed about him that the truth is as definitive as an Irish stew. . .until one reads this incredibly detailed and accurate biography of the corporal who rose to become the leader and idol of Germany. No matter what the reader's feelings are about Adolph, this account of Hitler's life shows his life in great detail and the complexity of the man. Even those who hate Hitler with intensity and passion will find an understanding of the man responsible for the deaths of many more millions than just the Jews.

hitler was not a monster; he was a man who did monstrous things. it's easy to dismiss him out of hand, but a study of this man's life is a study of someone who has taken hold of a vision for the future and will go to any lengths to achieve it, no matter the cost. and despite promises the world made, it happens again and again...because that's a part of human nature.

This is a very hard read. Very slow, but chalk full of information on the life of the worlds biggest madman.

I'm into about the 300th page out of over 1,300 nook pages and still going. If you want detail in a narrative form about Hitler I cannot imagine a more comprehensive and readable biography. But it's long and slightly tedious at times. You really have to want the information and understanding to pursue this book. And I'm only up to about 1930 at this point. Nevertheless, if you are interested in this subject matter then it is recommended.
