"Before you, my home was decorated in style. After you, my home is decorated in love." So begins the tender recital of love from parent to child that tells the story of the changes that take place after a little one joins the family. Along Came You combines simple yet insightful text by Karona Drummond with vibrant illustrations by Estelle Corke in this board book that answers the questions: What happens when the pleasures of a tidy, carefully decorated home are traded for the excitement of dressing up and messy art projects? When quiet evenings and precisely planned schedules are exchanged for busy days and crazy nights? What happens when the desire to experience joy yourself is replaced with the desire that another might experience joy?

Along Came You, written by Karona Drummond and illustrated by Estelle Corke, is a delightful children’s board book.  The illustrations are darling and the dialogue is between a mother and a daughter; sharing all the joys that have happened to the mom after her daughter came along.   Along Came You embraces the changes that happen when we become mothers.  Even dressing up takes on a new meaning.  The story itself is sweet, but I felt like the strength of the book was really in the illustrations.  I am in love with the bright colors that are used, the movement that is portrayed on the pages, and the faces of mom and daughter.  There are so many details illustrated on each page of this book.  While reading, you could also become very interactive in looking for a cat, teddy bear, butterfly, or even a Mr. Potato Head on the page.  Reading out loud can be so much fun!  If I have any one criticism of the book it is just that it is geared only to a little girl; it wouldn’t be engaging for a little boy.  It would be wonderful if the author/illustrator would produce a companion book with a father and his son. I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

In this sweet book a Mom tells her daughter how her life has changed because of her. The child in the picture looks like a preschooler. To me this would be a book that a Mom could read to her child as a toddler that could become a favorite as the child grows. I like the repetitive phrase of "before you" and "after you" used on each page. It is just the right length as well to keep the child's attention and the right size of board book for young hands to hold on their own. Children change all aspects of our lives, and this book celebrates those wonderful changes! A child may not realize the way he or she has caused so many things to change, but this book shares those changes in a positive, loving manner. Check out this book when you need a gift for a new Mom. This book was provided to me for my review by the BookLook bloggers review program.

I bought this book for my nieces and their Mom. She has two beautiful daughters that she adopted last year. This book so perfectly told their story. No matter how your child came into your life this book lets them know how wonderful your days are since they arrived.

First, I should say that I know Karona, who has cared for and taught both my sons, so I have followed her journey to become an author. Fortunately, not only is she a kind, creative person and a good storyteller, but she can also write! This lovely book, with delightful illustrations by Ms Corke which illuminate the text, encapsulates in brief but well chosen phrases what we go through when we change from being adults to becoming parents-activities we may give up to make way for even greater pleasures- sharing with our children. We spend time with a mother and young daughter and the enjoyment they share together in their simple routines as the mother tells about how life was before her child, and how much it has changed- and how much joy she has gained. As a teacher, I could see using this in a classroom to talk about daily activities and time. As a parent, I enjoy reading this with my sons and talking about our "befores and afters". "Along Came You" is appropriate for all adults and children (even older siblings with younger siblings can relate to it!). Next, I(and my sons) hope that Karona will write a companion book that features boys and maybe their fathers. . .

Along Came You by Karona Drummond and Estelle Corke is a touching look at how a mother's life changes after she has a child. First, Mia's thoughts: The book was about Mommy and me and how much we love each other. I really liked at the end where the mom said that life was amazing after you [the little girl]. That was the sweetest thing! There was a funny picture in there where the mom had food in her mouth so she looked like a walrus *giggles*. This book made me feel a thousand times a million happy because it reminded me of our family and my family makes me happy! It made me laugh, and I love to laugh! Now my (Mom's) thoughts. This book about a mother's love thoroughly captured the fun and joy of being a mother in the subtle and not so subtle ways our lives change. Meals, travel, and even sleep will never be the same after a child is born. Corke's illustrations have just the right amount of whimsy and emotion. The language is simple, and the repetitive structure allowed Mia to try to guess what was coming next. It's a sweet book, perfect for expecting or new moms, or even for old timers like me!
