Ashes to Ashes, Series 3

Ashes to Ashes, Series 3

CD

Overview

Like its two predecessors, the Ashes to Ashes, Series 3 soundtrack is comprised of early-'80s pop favorites, most of them British in origin, interspersed with dialogue from the television show and kicks off with a David Bowie song, in this case "Let's Dance." Ashes to Ashes is a British science fiction television series that aired for three seasons on BBC One from 2008 to 2010. The show involves a police officer who is shot and, upon gaining consciousness, finds herself transplanted back in time to 1981. Each season advances one year, with the third and final season taking place in 1983. Background music is prominently featured in Ashes to Ashes and enhances the show's period piece appeal. The Ashes to Ashes, Series 3 soundtrack includes some of the most popular pop hits from 1983 in the United Kingdom such as Spandau Ballet's "True," the Cure's "The Love Cats," and Tom Robinson's "War Baby." While practically all of the selections are British in origin, there are a couple American pop songs found here, namely Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" and Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." The Ashes to Ashes, Series 3 soundtrack isn't entirely comprised of songs from 1983, however. Roughly half of these songs date back to 1982 -- for instance, Tears for Fears' "Mad World," Yazoo's "Only You," and the Jam's "Town Called Malice" -- and there are couple others not from 1983, namely the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" from 1979 and Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes" from 1984. This trivial point aside, what matters most is that the selections on Ashes to Ashes, Series 3 are all classics that evoke the era well. Anyone who enjoyed the past couple volumes is sure to enjoy this one too. It's a fun blast from the past that fortunately doesn't overdo it with the dialog tracks, which are infrequent and brief.
