Of the dozens of Kenton albums and CDs I've listened to, this is the best. Originally recorded during a live performance at the Vegas Tropicana in Feb. 1959, the tracks offer nothing but straight ahead jazz and swing. From such Miller hits as "Tuxedo Junction" and "String of Pearls" to newer numbers (Gene Roland's haunting "Home Journey") to Kenton's ubiquitous "Intermission Riff" (I don't think "The Riff" was missing from ANY of his play dates) the listening is just fantastic: great solos (saxists Billy Root and Lenny Niehaus, and trumpeter Jack Sheldon especially)and fabulous ensemble work that only Kenton can provide. And to round out the CD, there's a funny tune sung by bassist Red Kelly. If you never buy another Kenton CD, by all means GET THIS ONE!
