Singer/songwriter Erykah Badu's Grammy-winning breakthrough 1997 debut, Baduizm, interrupted the monotonous sound of contemporary R&B with gentle lyrics and aching vocals layered over a bass heavy fusion of hip-hop and jazz grooves. Badu's sound was dubbed "retro soul" because her melancholy vocals drew comparisons to Billie Holiday but the deep, witty and often sassy lyrics of chart-topping singles such as "On & On," "The Other Side of the Game" and "Next Lifetime," clearly reflected a '90s feminist sensibility.

Erykah Badu's album is like a breath of fresh air. Finally a sister that you would want your daughter or your sister to be like, a strong proud African sister. Oh yeah and she has great music too. I'm an avid hip hop head but this is my favorite album that came out in 97.
Guest More than 1 year ago yourself with her music. Everyone has a little soul in them, use this CD as the key to let that part of you out-- it's been waiting all this time to breathe.
