Overview

Once upon a time, a young Steve Jones was captivated by stories that were passed down to him from his father about Blue Eagle. Magnificent and regal, this mighty bird safeguarded the animals of Peaceful Valley by keeping a keen eye on the happenings below. The morals and virtues that Jones was taught stayed with him as he grew up, and he later continued the Blue Eagle tradition by imparting the stories of Peaceful Valley to his children and grandchildren. Illustrated by his son, Steven Jones, Jr., The Ballad of Blue Eagle is a tribute to the elder Jones men and has been a compilation of stories and values that has brought generations of the Jones family together.

Sometimes we don¿t always see the clear reason for our actions right way. Steven Jones had listened to many a tale from his Father. He put this one into poetic form after his Father¿s passing. But then it sat and patiently waited for the next generation to play it¿s part. And when Steven Jr. asked to illustrate the story it had come full circle. This is not so very different from what happens in this tale. Days pass easily in Peaceful Valley, but then an event occurs that shakes up the residents and new respect is given to two average members of the group. Meanwhile, flying over head, having shown up just when he was needed was Blue Eagle, the spiritual version of Jones¿s Father. With a catchy tune to finish things up and wonderfully colorful illustrations capturing all the expressions the members of Peaceful Valley go thru during this story we should all be ready, when we finish reading, for a romp in the nearest meadow. Even if that meadow¿s only in our dreams!

Characters with names like Arny Armadillo, Rio Raccoon, Toby Turple, and Petula Porcupine teach life lessons, character values, and diversity. Jones imaginative tells the story of Peaceful Valley. Rhyming, metered verse, make this an enjoyable story for reading aloud. This inspirational story of friendship and heroism crosses generational lines and will be loved by young and old. Blue Eagle soars in the sky providing safety from evil forces, lurching in the shadows, waiting to invade Peaceful Valley. As the animals of Peaceful Valley are playing ¿sneak and peek¿, Clugar, the carnivorous cougar, comes out of hiding. He begins to chase Sammy Squirrel. Pete Rabbit runs ¿like a bullet¿ to find Blue Eagle for help. Toby Turple talked to a cricket before taunting Clugar trying to distract him from chasing Sammy. Blue Eagle comes to the rescue. Blue Eagle grasps Clugar with his strong talons and carries him away. Peace is restored to Peaceful Valley and its animal friends. Toby then tells the secret of ¿Cricket¿ another hero of the rescue. In the colorful illustrations created by Steven E. Jones, Jr. the animals come to life as children recognize their favorite animal friends, and enjoy the majesty of Peaceful Valley. I watched as five of my grandchildren, ages 4 through 11 listened as their grandmother read them the story. All five grandchildren took in every word. All eyes were glued to the pictures the pages were turned. I reminisced about my own childhood and the stories my father often told as he tucked us into the security of our beds at night. This is a book for the family, classrooms, and the school library. Steven E. Jones unlocks the imagination of the reader through his words as Steven E. Jones, Jr. also awakens the imagination through his illustrations. This Award winning book is beautifully done and makes an ideal gift.

There's something special about a picture book that was written and illustrated by a father-son team. This is a tale that had been handed down for generations, until Steven E. Jones decided to set it in print. In Ballad, young readers will be transported to Peaceful Valley, with its purple mountains, deep-blue river, forested hills, and some of the cutest critters in children's literature. This peaceful place is presided over by the watchful eye of Blue Eagle, and is 'ruled' by the Golden Rule. When danger threatens its inhabitants, the animals band together ¿ and discover new strengths in the process. The book contains wonderful messages for young people: the value of friends, cooperation, and looking out for others. The book also extols the importance of not rushing around: 'Slow it down, take your time, see the wonders that be.' The illustrations are so rich and detailed, the landscape so lovely, one cannot hurry through this book. Readers who enjoyed Blue Eagle might also enjoy Ruby Lee The Bumble Bee: a Bee's Bit of Wisdom. In it, a young girl faces a challenge and is encouraged by a wise friend to make use of her native wisdom and strength to meet that challenge.

I have just purchased this book for my grandchild and I am so pleased with it! To me, this book seems to have everything children love: friendly, fun animals, an exciting story and beautiful pictures. Most of all, it has a great POSITIVE MESSAGE - something that I find missing in a lot of children's books today. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book, even for older children and adults!
