A coming-of-age story about two girls, Jean and Fritz, vying for the heart of the same guy. Sunken Haven, Fire Island, NY is the seemingly idyllic summer playground of the privileged, a closed community where outsiders are tolerated, but never truly accepted. This YA novel is told in alternating voice between the two main characters. It’s about friendship, love, poor choices made and life changing decisions. I read the author’s letter at the beginning of the book, and she says her book is all about the freedom to choose who we love, and I get that. It’s an unforgettable story. Well written, I thought the author did an exceptional job with the ending. There is a lot of drinking and smoking, but then I realized it was set in 1976 and the legal drinking age at that time was eighteen and smoking was much more common and allowed in public spaces. Takes you back to a time before cell phones and PCs, a time when maybe life was a little simpler and moved at a slower pace.
