This luscious album showcases the talents of legendary slack-key guitarist Led Kaapana from the Big Island. The music on BLACK SAND will pull you in two directions: Go with the aloha spirit and waft on the warm, sweet melodic breezes, or dive amazed into Kaapana's extraordinary fingerpickin' style. How does he do it? Phrases cascade like waterfalls, themes soar like sea birds, and jaunty syncopations bounce off one another, all with a steady bass keeping it on track. On "Kanaka Waiwai/O Maria," the versatile Kaapana takes out his autoharp for an all-embracing romance of strumming and picking. Producer and pianist George Winston joins in on "Akaka Falls," a lovely improvisation with the sway of a 1950s love song. On "Highway to Hana," Kaapana takes off on the 12-string in a breathtaking and sparkling display with complex, shifting chord progressions. This album's raw virtuosity and steely strings are invigorating, yet Kaapana's nimble fingers make it all sound effortless and tropically relaxing. BLACK SAND is a truly glistening experience.
