From the creator of Hannibal Lecter and The Silence of the Lambs comes a story of evil, greed, and the consequences of dark obsession.

Twenty-five million dollars in cartel gold lies hidden beneath a mansion on the Miami Beach waterfront. Ruthless men have tracked it for years. Leading the pack is Hans-Peter Schneider. Driven by unspeakable appetites, he makes a living fleshing out the violent fantasies of other, richer men.

Cari Mora, caretaker of the house, has escaped from the violence in her native country. She stays in Miami on a wobbly Temporary Protected Status, subject to the iron whim of ICE. She works at many jobs to survive. Beautiful, marked by war, Cari catches the eye of Hans-Peter as he closes in on the treasure. But Cari Mora has surprising skills, and her will to survive has been tested before.

Monsters lurk in the crevices between male desire and female survival. No other writer in the last century has conjured those monsters with more terrifying brilliance than Thomas Harris. Cari Mora, his sixth novel, is the long-awaited return of an American master.

With Cari Mora, Thomas Harris has created another unforgettable cast of characters. This time out the villain is seeking gold buried under a Miami Beach estate once owned by notorious cartel boss Pablo Escobar. Cari Mora oversees the house due to her familiarity with the grounds and the idiosyncrasies that are present in all homes. But not all homes have millions of dollars of gold buried beneath the surface. An evil cadre of criminals and lunatics led by Hans-Peter Schneider descend upon Cari and the home, intending to recover the gold, at any cost. What happens is part pure evil, though thrilling, concluding with obvious and not so twists and turns.

A jumbled mess. Hard to believe this was written by the same author that wrote Silence of the Lambs

The characters might make an interesting, disturbing movie but the writing is basic and the plot development is missing. Skip the book and wait for the movie.

Not up to his standards. Would have been better if he would have taken his time and fleshed out the story. But still a good quick read.

I do not understand the negative reviews. Very good book. A little different but good

Great plot, horrible monster though the monster played second fiddle to the main plot. Some loose ends were not tied up in the rocketing finish, but all in all a great read!

Just what you would expect...the gore, the certifiable bad guys, and the snakes in the grass. You don't want to miss this.

So disappointed in this book! The storyline was decent but lacking detail to really get interested in the characters. Was this really a Harris book and if so what happened to his story telling skills?

I’ve waited so long for Thomas Harris to return, and he finally has, in a great book, independent of the Hannibal novels. He’s a terrific writer, and this book was a page-turner

My having the book signed by Harris gives this book a top rating of one star. Terrible story and writing takes away any other rating points.

Do not waste your time or money on. Disappointed that someone of Thomas Harris’s talent would release this.
