This is a nondescript collection of subdued (some might say torpid) downbeat grooves with little to recommend it. At its best, the disc -- titled Chillout Room: Cool Grooves -- is merely pleasant background listening, capable of easing tension. In 2002, there were so many similarly themed compilations with second- and third-tier artists doing a similar thing that this wound up falling through the cracks without much notice. Artists featured include Noisy Crayons ("October Weep"), Dugdealer ("Get Up"), Tears of a Prophet ("Follow Me"), Lemonade Speedster ("River Runs Deep"), and My Ghost ("Lullabye"). Those who want the same effect with loads more substance should seek out the likes of DJ Shadow, Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack, and Everything but the Girl.
