Overview

Christmas Greetings from the Presidents takes a comforting, nostalgic look back in time to when Americans viewed the annual Christmas message to the nation as the embodiment of a national spirit of unity and goodwill through both the best of times and the darkest days of national trials. The book, the first of its kind by a national publisher, chronicles presidential Christmas messages from the inception of this tradition in 1927 with Calvin Coolidge to President Obama. It provides the historical context of the era, rarely-seen archival photographs that offer us a window into the history unfolding at the time, and a sidebar “Did you Know” feature with trivia that often shines a new light on the personality of the president as he responds to unplanned Christmas-time events.

Christmas Greetings from the Presidents
Introduction

Christmas is a time for reflection and renewal, for family and faith, and Americans have long celebrated the holiday with joy and charity. Tradition holds that Alabama was the first state to recognize Christmas as an official state holiday in 1836-(Oklahoma was last in 1907)-but it wasn't until June 28, 1870, that Christmas was declared a federal holiday.

In 1923, the White House began a tradition of lighting the "National Community Christmas Tree," and in 1927, President Calvin Coolidge gave a short message to the American people. Every Christmas since then, the President of the United States has delivered a holiday message to the nation. Some of the messages have been long, others have been short, but they all have expressed a desire for Americans to find "peace on earth" and encouraged us to extend "good will to men."

Gathered in this volume are selections from at least one of the Christmas messages from each president since Coolidge. Alongside those presidential messages is a brief "historical note" that offers us a glimpse into the history unfolding at that time. For example, what President Franklin D. Roosevelt said during Christmas 1941 is made even more poignant knowing that the attack on Pearl Harbor had happened just weeks earlier. Likewise, one of President Ronald Reagan's Christmas messages is even more impressive knowing that the Iron Curtain was about to come down.

These historic and inspirational messages from the presidents of the United States are each filled with the spirit of Christmas and remind us that both patriotism and faith in God has a place in our holiday celebrations.
