Naturally, the not-so-unspoken joke behind the title of Willie Nelson's 2010 album is that it's been so long since he's played straight country music, he needs to clearly label it when he does. Of course, that's not strictly true: just as recently as 2009 he was ripping it up with Asleep at the Wheel, turning out a straight-ahead western swing record that is every bit as country as Country Music, although it is true that he's never quite cut a collection of country music as hushed and muted as this. The soft-plucked string bass and strummed acoustic guitars are trademarks of T-Bone Burnett, the roots music producer whose well-tailored analog impressionism fetishizes authenticity, prizing every piece of pristinely preserved vintage equipment and then recording them immaculately, often with appealing results. There's a nicely weathered assurance to Nelson's performance -- his voice never strains, he throws off licks with a casual virtuosity -- and he sounds like an old pro happy to play with whoever is in the studio, happy to sing whatever the producer puts in front of him.

It is too much to expect Nelson to return to his free-wheeling 70s form. However, this set could have used a bit more energy. Some drums here and there would help. T Bone Burnett seems to take a minimal approach to instrumentation which explains that flaw. Still Willie's singing is as sly as ever and there are several nice gospel cuts. I would still rather hear this set than the dreck Nashville passes off as country these days. The participants deserve credit for bucking the mainstream. 3 1/2 stars.

This is a great cd. Im glad willie decided to bring back some old country. I love old country and it makes me happy to see someone still singing it! I would recommend this cd to any one who likes willie nelson.

This maybe the lowest point in Willy's recording career. I know a lot of people will call his voice 'weather-worn' and 'world-weary' and yeah, its all that. But, when I heard this album I thought 'he's letting his voice do all the work while his soul is vacationing in the Bahamas'. Dark as a Dungeon is a harrowing song that'll make your spine tingle, but it could easily have been replaced here with a song about strained carrots. An album with this song selection should have been edgy and exciting. Its just weird that a man with Nelson's credentials would make a bachelor pad country album out of it.
