Cuban Odyssey

Cuban Odyssey

by Jane Bunnett

“We had no idea there was so much music here,” says saxophonist Jane Bunnett at the beginning of Spirits of Havana, a 2001 Canadian Film Board documentary about her experiences in Cuba. Bunnett’s new CD, Cuban Odyssey, presents complete tracks of the music from that film, along with some additional material. Bunnett, a who lives in Toronto, has been a pioneer among North American musicians who work regularly in Latin jazz; her collaborations have included performing and recording in Havana, as well as bringing instruments and repair technicians to needy schools. For the film, Bunnett and her husband, trumpeter Larry Cramer, traveled not just to Havana but also to other Cuban towns, some in the island’s interior, and in the course of the trip she was able to play in a variety of configurations. At its best, the album brings alive the inspiration Bunnett draws from various Cuban musicians, and her discovery of the depth and breadth of musical styles on the island. Her improvisations sound especially fiery as recorded in a public courtyard in the port city of Matanzas, urged on by the folkloric rumba ensemble Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. “Pensado en Jane (Thinking of Jane),” a composition by 18-year-old pianist David Virelles, a conservatory student, makes fascinating use of the double-reeded “Chinese trumpets” of Cuba’s eastern end. In each province she visits, Bunnett finds a different sort of musical blend: In Cienfuegos, her soprano horn turns playful against the twangy guitar and tres of the son group Los Naranjos; in Camagüey, her flute soars alongside Desendann, a ten-voice choir that sings in Haitian patois. Cuban Odyssey documents a cross-cultural love affair that is still in full flower.
