About the Author

Vivian Howard is the chef and owner of the acclaimed Chef and the Farmer restaurant in Kinston, North Carolina, fifteen miles from her home of Deep Run. She trained under Wylie Dufresne and Sam Mason at WD-50 and was a member of the opening team at Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Spice Market in New York. The first woman since Julia Child to win a Peabody Award for a cooking program, she co-created and stars in the PBS series A Chef's Life.

Recently moved to North Carolina from Texas. While I do miss good Texas BBQ and TexMex cuisine- Vivian Howard, through this book and TV show have helped me become culinarily acclimated to my new home. Highly recommend this book - the corn and tomato section alone are worth the purchase!

I love to cook and I recently got this book for a birthday gift. I loved it from the minute that I opened the book. The recipes instantly reminded me of spending summers in my granny's kitchen down in Alabama. From the okra to the butter beans, she overdelivers on true Southern comfort food. My favorite is the spreadable cheesecake. It a must have for any time of the year. I'd also recommend "Simple, Healthy and Delicious" from Chef Jai Scovers. I have been raving about her Easy Roasted Chicken and Forbidden Rice. Pair it with some glazed carrots and you have a meal that your entire family will love.

Just as Vivian Howard excels at being a chef, telling her stories of how she got there, giving us glimpses into her family, and detailing her wonderful dishes as well as opinions, this is a wonderful book. My husband first stumbled upon a "Chef's Life" on PBS and eventually got me hooked on the series. I have all the DVDs and find this an book an extension and complement to the series. Great job, Vivian!

This is a very large and heavy cookbook of 562 pages. If you are a gourmet cook or chef you will love it. Do not expect your typical southern recipes. Vivian Howard is probably more Southern than this cookbook. She takes southern ingredients and puts a spin on them. There are lots of pictures and stories she shares about growing up in the south that are interesting and entertaining and it reads like a novel. I found some of her recipes to be time consuming to prepare. My favorite recipe is her Sausage Balls made with cornmeal and cream cheese. There are helpful hints on some of the recipes. The cookbook is in sections of ingredients such as recipes for Apples, Figs, Ground Corn, Turnips, Oysters, Rice, Sausages, Beets, etc. If you are a collector of cookbooks you need this one.
