About the Author

EMILY WINFIELD MARTIN sketches, paints, and stitches to create imaginary worlds and characters. She is the author/illustrator of The Black Apple's Paper Doll Primer. Her store, The Black Apple, has been featured in national publications and on TV shows, including the New York Times and The Martha Stewart Show. The inspiration for Oddfellow's Orphanage, Emily's first book for children, came from the real I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Oddfellows), dancing bears, ragtime music, and magic and mysterium of all sorts. Originally, Emily painted portraits of the children and adults at the imaginary orphanage, and from the portraits the stories emerged—enough to fill a book!
Emily lives among the giant fir trees of Portland, Oregon, with her fellow adventurer, Josiah, and their cat Miette.

First, look at the other reviews and you will see that none of them are serious. I am writing a children's book and the librarian showed me this one. It's delightful!! The artwork is magical and I see this as a perfect book for those children who are afraid of the dark and afraid of going to sleep alone. It's for younger children and I strongly recommend it based on the magical quality of its art.

This book is perfection. I absolutely love the concept, the text has a beautiful cadence, and the illustrations are gorgeous. On top of that, my 15-month-old son loves it. He loves reading it over and over at bedtime! He's even starting to name the animals as we get to them ("bear," "fox," "bird," etc.). It's great as a bedtime book, but it also has substance. I'd highly recommend it!
