The most tempting of all sweets becomes the key weapon in a battle of sensual pleasure versus disciplined self-denial in this comedy. In 1959, a mysterious woman named Vianne (Juliette Binoche) moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community's activities are dominated by the local Catholic church. A few days after settling into town, Vianne opens up a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship -- shortly after the beginning of Lent. While the townspeople are supposed to be abstaining from worldly pleasures, Vianne tempts them with unusual and delicious chocolate creations, using her expert touch to create just the right candy to break down each customer's resistance. With every passing day, more and more of Vianne's neighbors are succumbing to her sinfully delicious treats, but the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), the town's mayor, is not the least bit amused; he is eager to see Vianne run out of town before she leads the town into a deeper level of temptation. Vianne, however, is not to be swayed, and with the help of another new arrival in town, a handsome Irish Gypsy named Roux (Johnny Depp), she plans a "Grand Festival of Chocolate," to be held on Easter Sunday. Based on the novel by Joanne Harris, Chocolat features a distinguished supporting cast, including Judi Dench, Lena Olin, Carrie-Anne Moss, Peter Stormare, Hugh O'Conor, and Leslie Caron.

I can't eat chocolate due to kidney stones, but this is a wonderful movie. Saw it again today after years, and it still gets my whole family. Everything about it is perfect.

I absolutely love this film! I love the story, the music, the characters, the location and the chocolate. There are so many layers in this film and many lessons to be learned. This film grabs you, pulls you in and holds you spellbound until its completion. I love the mother and daughter who travel with the North wind to new towns and villages to dispense their secret chocolate recipes which seem to have a magical ability to transform those who partake of them. The women in their family have been wandering with their chocolate for centuries. The people of this ancient village they come to seem to be oppressed, but have learned to live with it. Can chocolate truly set them free?

Whether it¿s milk, dark or white chocolate that you prefer, it doesn¿t matter when it comes to this delectable hit film, `Chocolat¿. This movie is so delicious that it makes your mouth water. The ingredients include a taste of French culture blended with a dash of humor and lightly sprinkled with romance. What more could your taste buds crave? Taking place in a small, quaint village in France, the beautiful architecture and the romantic French accent, which rolls off the tongue in the English language, paint the overall mood of the picture. It is bittersweet timing for Vianne (Juliette Banoche) and her illegitimate daughter to relocate to a morally rigid village during `Lent¿ and open a Chocolaterie. The chocolate shop and Vianne¿s immorality immediately spark small talk in the small village where bigger hopes and dreams are not in any non-religious newcomer¿s favor¿unless you are Vianne who can make people melt not only with her divine and sinful homemade chocolates, but with her sensual charm and wholesome kindness. With that combination, the townspeople¿s morality is put to the test. Without a care in the world other than for her daughter¿s security and to guess people¿s favorite chocolate, Vianne¿s cares begin to take on more and more ingredients with each new batch of chocolate¿is she able to mix the village¿s cares into a new ingredient¿stir a new way of life? `Chocolat¿ is a feel-good, clean movie that has the same aphrodisiac affect as eating chocolate. Be sure to indulge in your favorite chocolate along with a bottle of French wine because this film will make your taste buds water. Other big stars to enjoy in this movie are: Carrie-Anne Moss, Johnny Depp and Judi Dench. `Chocolat¿ is without a doubt a full 5 planet movie. ( Originally posted at )

I rented Chocolat hoping for a chick flick I could share with my wife. I got a movie that touched a chord in our hearts about the power of grace to transform lives. The film intentionally sets the new-to-town Vienne against the local mayor and church. The contest is over a marriage torn by abuse. The plot demonstrates the power of Grace to change the heart where law only cleans up the surface. Every pastor in America should watch this film and take heed. It has become one of my favorite movies. It is beautifully filmed and exquisitely acted.

This beautiful film is richly drawn and dreamily acted by its wonderful cast. There is a touch of magical fantasy and a ton of understated humor. There is a flat moment toward the end of the film but that did not spoil Chocolat's control over my heart.

Heart-warming, Judi Dench is great and it is intelligent as well as greatly entertaining.

Chocolat is a beautiful film, both visually and in its messages. The primary characters are women, and they are strong and realistic and fallible. The men involved add to the story, but the real joy here is in seeing how the women adapt to their circumstances, and how they support and inspire each other. Fair warning: the chocolate confection-making scenes will make your mouth water, so have some Godiva in the cupboard.

Great movie with Juliette Binoche and Alfred Molina as polar opposites who clash over morality in this tale about a free spirited chocolate shop owner and the local head of the town. Watch for Judi Dench and Johnny Depp too.

Although I'm not partial to chocolate myself, I thought this movie was wildly romantic, richly photographed and superbly acted. Johnny Dep was a handsome, delicious rogue. Judi Dench was fabulous, Juliette Binoche was a delight and Carrie Ann Moss - surprise - was so totally different from her MATRIX character, it was mind boggling! All in all, this movie is a great escape from the mundane and really showed the powers of love and chocolate -- when mixed, it's like an explosion! Bravo!

This movie is as sweet as it is sentimental. It is amazing and a beautiful story. It is definitely a must see and a must own above all else. This is sure to be a classic "staple" to any movie collection.

The story line is really good. It reminds people of faith how the ones they want to reach out to can have more tolerance and show God's love better than they do. You walk away having learned a big lesson.

''Chocolat'' was a wonderful movie. It was not what I expected it to be. Being an abid Johnny Depp lover, I decided to rent this and see how it was. Not only did he look amazing, but he portrayed his character, ''Roux'', well. Juliette Binoch was wonderful in this film. She did a wonderful job playing ''Vianne''. And adding to the movie a wonderful flair of life. Vianne is a breath of fresh air in a small French Town, who does not exactly welcome her. The movie is about the changes and struggles in life, which are not always easy, but are made a little sweeter with chocolat.

I absolutely loved this movie. Aside from the obvious aspect of Johnny Depp, it has a great story line and what girls wouldn't like a movie about a Chocolatier. Johnny did a wonderful job in this movie, plus he got to play his guitar, which was very hot.
