This spoof of the 1930s and '40s crime stories ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime as it tells the story of Johnny Dangerously (Byron Thames as the young Johnny, Michael Keaton as the older), a devoted son to his ailing mother (Maureen Stapleton), so ill that she needs money for several operations. Johnny has nowhere to turn, and because gangsters tend to flourish in his neighborhood he goes to work for Dundee, a benevolent godfather-gangster type, in order to cover his mother's medical bills. Johnny hides his association with Dundee from his younger brother Tommy (Griffin Dunne) and goes so far as to pay for Tommy's law school fees -- supporting him until Tommy joins the staff of the local (and corrupt) district attorney's office for Burr (Danny DeVito). When Johnny starts working for Dundee, he clashes with the evil Vermin (Joe Piscopo) right from the beginning, but things only get worse. After Dundee decides to retire, Johnny ascends to the helm, and it does not look like Vermin is going to take that sitting down.

I loved this movie as a kid and still laugh every time I see it. It has numerous pop culture catch phrases that I still use to this day. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. It's one of my favorite all time comedies.

This movie is classic gansta and slapstick. One of the best from the 80's. Marilu Henner is hot.

This is a movie that will always make you smile, no matter how many times you see it. Immediately, you are hooked in when Dundee (the head gangster and Johnny's mentor), when he offers young Johnny a job for $50.00 and the next scene, conveniently has the family doctor telling Johnny that his mother needs an operation for $49.95. This is a movie where you can definitely find the unexpected. Like, a newspaper loosing his hearing when he gets conked by the morning edition, or Cindy Capone. Johnny's neighbor knocking on his door asking to borrow a cup of bullets for hubby Al. Johnny sort of reminds you of a cartoon in some spots but still manages to leave your mouth hanging. I mean, who would've ever guessed that Mom Kelly could actually hit Joe Pisco's character so hard despite all of those operations or that the head D. A. would actually die in a ''commercial.'' Johnny Dangerously is great fun, hence the four stars. It is comedy as it should be- cartoonish, sarcastic, and full of surprises.
