Critically lauded indie horror feature KatieBird: Certifiable Crazy Person
finally makes its way to home theaters thanks to the fine folks at Heretic Films. While it remains to be seen what unknowing audiences will think about Justin Paul Ritter's unnerving ode to exploitation, it's obvious that they won't be prepared for what they'll ultimately get. The same goes for viewers familiar with the film, thanks to the ample extras supplied on disc one. This, however, could be seen as a double-edged sword thanks to the outspokenness of the film's director. While there's no doubt that the guy has talent, his rantings in the "Movies NOT Excuses" featurette will leave many with a sour taste in their mouth. Make no mistake, Ritter is a passionate person; unfortunately, his exuberance over his success in making this film comes off as what can only be called a belittling experience to the viewer. Ritter tries to instill inspiration into the hearts of wannabe filmmakers, but it comes off as a brash, egotistical outburst that most will find offensive. Thankfully, his bravura ramblings are a bit more in check on the audio commentary, in which he's joined by stars Helene Udy
, Taylor M. Dooley
, and Lee Perkins
. Inside tips on indie film shooting are plentiful, though, so those interested in the process should take note. Other features include a mini-featurette on the makeup, along with a collection of trailers and some Easter eggs. The film has also been packaged with its soundtrack, which is a big plus to anyone who digs the score by Michael Iannantuono.
