A love-sick nobleman seeking to marry his sweetheart does his best to find his ruling prince a suitable bride so that he himself may wed in this screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical The Princess and the Pea. No one in Prince Dauntless (Denis O'Hare)'s kingdom is permitted to marry until the prince himself exchanges vows -- a problem hindered by the fact that the prince's overprotective mother, Queen Aggravain (Carol Burnett), has thus far thwarted all efforts to marry her son. This does not sit well with the honorable Sir Harry, a man whose heart longs to wed the fair Lady Larkin (Zooey Deschanel), and after a long and arduous journey specifically designed to find the prince a bride, Sir Harry returns to his kingdom to present Princess Winnifred of the swamps (Tracey Ullman). Immediately stricken by the princess, Prince Dauntless sets into motion plans for a lavish wedding as his scheming mother cooks up a test that's sure to send his marital plans awry.

I can appreciate the point that our media and culture have grown increasingly tawdry, and a return to "old fashioned" values might mot be such a bad idea. However, not all musicals are written for small children; most, in fact, are not. That fact does not, in itself, necessarily mean that the play is a bad one; it means that you may prefer to screen your child's viewing and reading material before she consumes it.

I have directed and produced the stage version of this show several times and have always loved it. Since the television remakes of such classics as BYE BYE BIRDIE and THE MUSIC MAN were so awful, I was afraid MATTRESS would follow suit. But, it did NOT. It was GREAT! In spite of the many cuts, it retained its true essence and was wonderfully produced. Tracey Ullman was surprisingly well-suited for Fred and did a great job. Carol Burnett was her stellar self. I loved the additional songs she did, especially the reprise of "Happily Ever After." I highly recommend purchasing this musical.

When I was in highschool, outr spring musical for our senior play was Once Upon a Mattress. I had the pleasure of playing Lady Larken. It was an exellent movie as well!! I was so excited when I heard that it was going to be showing on ABC. I had to rush home from work and watch it because I wanted to see what the differences were. They're weren't many except I pictured all the characters as my friends who played the roles. I would love to see it again!!

My school did this for a musical and it was really cute. I loved it when Dauntless said, "Fred! What a beautiful name!" to Winnifred (nicknamed Fred) F and an R and an E and a D and an F-R-E-D fred yeah!!

was really cute with great songs, I was loving it until I had to explain to my 5 year old how Lady Larkin could have a baby without first having a husband. I thought it was quite inappropriate, I may be old fashioned but do we really want our children to think unprotected sex before marriage is ok?

I thought that it was really funny and well-acted. The costumes were great as was the makeup. The fractured-fairy tale has humor that only those familiar with the original will be able to catch. I especially loved the princess swimming the moat!!
