An aging rock star attempts to fend off bankruptcy and a record label lawsuit by teaming with his ex-flame and former producer to form a band that will only exist for 24 hours. It's been a long time since Pete Jones (X front man Jon Doe) has released any music, and lately his fans have started to question whether or not his much-anticipated new album will ever actually be released. Fresh out of money and inspiration as his label threatens to sue, Pete finds hope in the form of Laura Klein (Aimee Mann). A former lover of Pete's who also produced his early albums, Laura has subsequently found success as the host of the popular radio program "World Café." Now, Pete and Laura are both at precarious stages in their respective careers. They need an act that can prove they are still relevant, and what better way to do so than to hand pick the musicians? Subsequently assembling a disparate group of musicians to see what they kind of music they can produce in a 24-hour window, Pete and Laura find that sometimes inspiration can come when you least expect it as they prepare for the band to perform for the first and only time ever on "World Café."
