Back in 1972, Leslie ("The Outer Limits"; "The Name of the Game") Stevens created a television series about a high-tech futuristic private detective agency, whose field agents were outfitted with wearable camera/microphone/transmitter systems, and radio implants, putting them in constant contact with a room full of specialists ready to provide advice and support. The series only lasted one season, and was never rebroadcast, except for occasional airings of the pilot. But it is fondly remembered by science fiction fans, who have been patiently waiting for a DVD release for years. Finally, Warner Archive has released it. While it was a bare-bones transfer, with no "extras" whatsoever, it was done from the best copy available (unlike many hastily produced DVDs that appear to have been copied from VHS tape), probably a 35mm film print with very little wear, and the result is truly a thing of beauty. It is unquestionably a creature of its times, with an odd combination of early-1970s-vintage computer hardware with miniaturized communication equipment that's a bit beyond even today's technology, and rather dated graphics and sound effects, but the same thing could be said about Star Trek. And as with Star Trek it is the story, and the characters, that make it worthwhile. Hopefully, this release of the pilot will lead to a release of the entire series.
