Janet McTeer follows up her Oscar-nominated performance in Tumbleweeds (1999) with this period drama set during the 1910s. Dr. Lily Penleric (McTeer), an uptight musicologist, is furious after getting denied tenure again at an elite all-male East Coast university. She promptly quits out of protest, and having nowhere else to go, she joins her sister in a remote mountain school. Her high-minded, refined ways quickly clash with the locals, yet her academic interests are peaked when she realizes that this bucolic mountain culture is thoroughly infused with music that harkens back to traditional English and Scottish folk ballads. After retrieving some tools, including a primitive recording device, from the East Coast, she sets out collecting songs. The locals react with a mixture of amusement, bafflement, and suspicion. Meanwhile, a mining company is strong-arming the impoverished residences into selling their coal-rich land for a pittance. Lily soon realizes that the culture she's seeking to preserve is quickly being torn asunder. Aidan Quinn and David Patrick Kelly also appear in this film, which was screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival.

I am of Irish decent and loved the story of people I could actually identify with and hearing the old songs was like the roots of many Irish songs I have heard my entire life. The slow pace was engaging and the love stories were wonderful and real.

Taj Mahal, Hazel Dixon - who could ask for more? Real mountain music. Hokey Hollywood ending.

This is not a teeny-bopper movie. This is a real story with real people.I loved the romantic costumes, the misty mountain and forest scenery, the rustic log cabins, and the hauntingly beautiful music and singing. Before I saw this movie I wasn't into folksy- mountain music at all, but I am really turned on about this!

I think that this is one of the best movies to come out in a long time. The storyline was great. I think Maggie Greenwald did an excelent job of incorporating the scene between Jane Adams and her lover was so well considering things like that weren't even thought about during that time. Both the soundtracks are also great to listen to.

This film renewed my passion for folk music by the outstanding performances of the cast and their obvious joy when performing the songs.

This is a wonderful movie that lends itself to a group viewing and discussion of many factors - women in the academic world, education, opportunity, history, same sex relationships, etc. The caring of the main character for her work and the culture of the mountain people is interesting to watch develop. The music is outstanding. As a person from an Appalachian background, it was a treat to see my history and hear some of the songs I remembered my Granny singing. I had first seen this movie years ago and was delighted to find it again. I also have the soundtrack.

This movie is one of the best I've seen in a long long time. It's heart warming, sad and happy, lots of different emotions all at once. The music is great. I could watch this movie everyday for at least a year or two. Worth every penny!

An engrossing film - I actually got goosebumps just listening to the music and most of all, the voices that made the songs so special. This is a heartfelt piece of work and makes you want more just like it !

The lesbian love story was a bit of a turnoff. Not sure why the producers had to ruin a good story and GREAT music with this sop to modern mores. Interesting to see Pat Carroll for the first time in 40 years since her "Make Room for Daddy" days.

I've watched this movie several times now - the acting is excellent, the storyline interesting and fun and the music is sublime! Throw in the very sexy Aidan Quinn and his attraction to the fascinating Janet McTeer and you've got a fine little movie. I highly recommend.
