Set in the present day, director Terry Gilliam's fantastical morality tale follows the traveling show of the mysterious Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) -- a man who once won a bet with the Devil himself, and possesses the unique ability to guide the imagination of others. Many centuries ago, Dr. Parnassus won immortality in a bet that found the malevolent Mr. Nick (Tom Waits) coming up short. While few would be foolish enough to try their luck against the powers of darkness a second time, Dr. Parnassus did precisely that -- this time trading his mortality for youth on the understanding that his firstborn would become the property of Mr. Nick when the child reaches his or her 16th birthday. Flash-forward to the present day, and Dr. Parnassus' daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole), is about to celebrate her sweet sixteen. Dr. Parnassus is desperate to save his little girl from her fiery fate, so when Mr. Nick arrives to collect, he senses the good doctor's malaise and cooks up a wager too enticing to refuse: Dr. Parnassus and Mr. Nick will each compete to seduce five souls, with possession of Valentina going to whoever manages to complete the task first. As the competition begins to heat up, a mysterious man named Tony (Heath Ledger) appears. Could Tony be the one man capable of helping Dr. Parnassus win the competition and save Valentina? While the sudden death of prominent Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus player Heath Ledger in January of 2008 left Gilliam and company scrambling to find a means of salvaging the film -- which was already well into principal photography at the time -- the cavalry soon arrived in the form of Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell, who each serve as alternate-dimension versions of Tony when the character crosses through a paranormal mirror.

Dazzling visuals and spectacular performances characterize the latest confection from director Terry Gilliam. Gilliam's previous films, ranging from the bizarrely-brilliant Brazil to the disastrous The Brothers Grimm, are all imaginative, but Imaginarium blows them away. The special effects are masterful, bright and vivid. Heath Ledger, in his final performance, is perfect as dark, mysterious and irresistably charming Tony. Depp, Law and Farrell fill his absence with respect for Ledger and his work, and donated their salaries for the film to his daughter. Christopher Plummer is genius, as always, and Valentina Cole, in her acting debut, is stunning. Overall, if fans can accept the complicated, twist-filled plot and suspend disbelief, they'll find Imaginarium is a film which caters perfectly to the imagination.

Terry and the cast, Ledger's last movie which is so very sad, out did themselves on this one! It is a great movie that makes you think while entertaining you. I can and have watched it several times and pick up different aspects of the movie each time.

Having been a fan of Terry Gilliam's since his days with the Python team, I was not disappointed in his most recent effort, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The man knows how to bring the best out of his actors, even in the most bizarre situations. Whether they're hanging from a bridge in the cold London weather, or prancing around an imaginary, larger-than-life video game, his actors are believable. Despite the trials that seem to follow Gilliam on his endeavors, Parnassus pulled through all the trouble and grief involved in making the film. It was a bittersweet experience for me as I watched Heath Ledger on the big screen for the last time. His Tony is extremely likable, despite his shadowed past. The Gilliam-Ledger team was remarkable. They were a natural pairing and pure talent at its best. All the actors are delightful to watch, especially veteran actor Christopher Plummer in the title role. Gilliam seamlessly wove Depp, Law, and Farrell into the role of Tony fill Heath's shoes in the fantasy scenes. Hats off to the three of them. The DVD itself is a wonderful addition to the Gilliam library, with all its extras and remarkable picture. Words cannot describe the extra footage of Heath Ledger mugging for the camera in costumes and playing around with the cast on the Imaginarium stage. That alone is worth the price and more. Gilliam captured him as only Gilliam can do. So if you want to escape, even for a short time, treat yourself to The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and marvel in the world of Terry Gilliam's imagination.

The was the "other" movie Heath Ledger was working on when he passed. The directors really turned this into a working memorial..
