Overview

A remake of the Spanish film Open Your Eyes (1997), this thriller from director Cameron Crowe bears one of several discarded titles for his previous, Oscar-winning film Almost Famous (2000). Tom Cruise stars as David Ames, a womanizing playboy who finds romantic redemption when he falls in love with his best friend's girlfriend Sofia (Penelope Cruz, reprising her role from the original film). Before that relationship can begin, however, David is coaxed into a car driven by an ex-lover, Julie (Cameron Diaz), who turns out to be suicidal. Driving her car off a bridge, Julie kills herself and horribly disfigures David. Reconstructive surgery and the loving support of Sofia seem to reverse David's luck, but eerie incidents are soon making him question the reality of his existence and his control over his life, even while he is suspected of complicity in Julie's death. Vanilla Sky (2001) bears the expected Crowe trademark of an obsession with recent pop culture and particularly rock music, a more important element of the remake than the original film. That project's writer/director, Alejandro Amenabar, crafted his own supernatural hit the same year with The Others (2001), starring Nicole Kidman, the soon-to-be-ex-wife of Cruise.

This film was way too confusing and I did not feel that watching it again was a good use of my time. I am reasonably intelligent but this was over the top. Director's commentary just convinced me some people in Hollywood take themselves way too seriously.

Do not watch this movie if you are just in the mood to veg out for the evening. But if you want something a' la Memento which will make you think as you watch, this is definetly the film to see. There is new stuff to notice every time. Just remember: there are no ''final'' answers or interpretations to this film - you have to find those inside yourself.

This movie started out slow but picked up in the relationship aspects in the beginning of the movie. It even added a lot of heat where it was needed. When the first twist (of which there were many) occurred, it was discomforting and very confusing. Still, I stayed with it, as once again the relationships among the characters again Intrigued me. By the time the ending came, I was frustrated beyond reason and the ending didn't make my comfort level with this film any more palatable.

At its simplest, it is a morality tale about truly seeing the reality around you. It was all about what a blithe David sees, and how he is seen. The sketches of the characters..how about the 7 Dwarves? Cruise plays Sleeping Beauty, who constantly needs waking up. He first dreams of an empty city; he notices when Julliana is making him uncomfortable, but won't see that she is in love with him; he doesn't see the bicyclist and almost gets in a traffic accident that kills him; he can't choose the color of the magazine color; when he meets Sophia, he is oblivious to his 'best friend'; showing works of art at his place; at her place, he notces the photos on here fridge, and decides they must draw charactures of each other, but then can't see or draw any flaws in Sophia; abandons his newly acquired resolve to look at his job and relationships with people, and doesn't forsee the consequences of getting in the car with Julliana; sees only the superficial changes of the accident...the analogy goes on and on. He only slowly begins to see that the reality that he wished to create and see will ultimately fail, and in the end, he choses to face a real new world, instead of continuing with the Lucid Dream.

Vanilla Sky rocks! Tom Cruise is still one of the hottest guys in Hollywood!!!! But that¿s not the only reason why I liked this movie¿ The way Monet¿s painting was integrated into the theme was so bada$$! The ending was amazing too ¿ a bit ambiguous, but I think they ultimately ended up together, as it should be. I could watch this movie over and over again¿

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot. The actors are wasted in this movie. This could have been a good movie if Cameron Crowe had any talent. Don't waste your time and money. This film is nonsense !

Vanilla Sky is one of my favorite 5 movies of all time, but I am wondering. I saw this film for the first time when I was eleven years old and I loved it. How is it that multiple grown people on this website could not understand this movie? I mean now that I own it and have watched it multiple times, I have a much better sense of clairty, but I did not find it confusing, persay. I guess everyone has their own likes and dislikes, not to mention intelligence quotients. Anyway, I can't stop watching this film. Thank you Cameron Crowe.

Vanilla Sky is either a disappointment when viewed against Indie Film standards, or a happily confusing lark when compared to the unending deluge of big budget / low-minded Hollywood that's released weekly. On the plus side, we find a movie that engages the viewer and the mind. A movie that is certainly confusing at first sitting, it is that rare commodity: the movie we like to talk about later. Like Memento or Barton Fink, people will find themselves dissecting the minutiae of the film after it's over. Also impressive is the fact that Tom Cruise, one of Hollywood's famed pretty boys, spends at least two-thirds of the film either hidden under a mask, or horribly disfigured. Not a role many other actors would jump to take. On the down side, Vanilla Sky, (a re-make ?) is basically an Art House or Indie film starring a big Hollywood actor. What could have been an interesting view on the hidden nature of man, or alternate/multiple realities, or even a study on the nature of reality itself, instead ends up like an art house rip-off of Total Recall. Rating: B- / C+ FYI: 1) When did the universe change so much that "Banky" from Chasing Amy could get a lead role playing opposite Tom Cruise? 2) When did Penelope Cruz get the role of Indecipherable Speaker, ala Brad Pitt in Snatch or Fenster in The Usual Suspects? 3) When did Paul McCartney last have a decent single? Here, with the title track.

Such an innovative and contemporary, original story, with unimaginable fear and love as the ultimate backbone for its true creativity. Tome Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Jason Lee all shine with top-notch performances that allow every audience member to empathize with the characters' every emotion. A truly wonderful film, and my continuous favorite of all time.

This is a great movie for those of you who have a practice lucid dreaming...true if you know nothing on LD it is confusing...and for those who ask why he didn't get the girl at the end...if you use your imagination and listen carefully....i believe he did...just listen to the voice at the end when he is being woke up once more...it was her....and the fact that they said they would meet in another life time...tadaaa!!!

I was about 18 when I first watched this movie and I fell in love with it. Of the many people I know, I can count on one hand the number of people who like it. But the thing is about this movie is either you hate it because you don't understand it and it doesn't make any sense or you absolutely love it, no in between. I tell people they don't understand it and they argue they do. If you understand this movie it's absolutely great. I bought and watched it for 3 months straight while I fell asleep at night and still now I catch something new everytime I watch it. It's the wonderfully romantic movie about love at first sight. And I feel that the little things in this movie makes it great, how one little decision can effect your whole life. Movie is unreal my all time favorite never to be surpassed.

this film is going to get the all the credit it deserves. You have to watch this movie atleast 2-3 times before you can really like it and begin to realise all it has to offer. One of my favorite films.

This movie ''messes'' with your brain - makes you THINK. (What a concept!!) Sadly, being made to think is not for most moviegoers. No kidding, afterwards while making love to my wife, I wondered briefly for a fraction of a second if she might suddenly morph into someone else. Loved Benny the Dog. Wonderful imagery.

Ever doze off in the middle of some meeting and you dream you're fallling? Your mind tells you you're falling, but in reality, your head is slipping off your hand or you're leaning to one side as you sleep. This is a mix of the body and mind taking in information, trying to discern what is happening as you sleep. This movie does the same by evoking the brightest and darkest parts of a man's psyche that eventually lead to a spiritual awakening. Kick a$$ flick.

I have seen this movie twice and I think it is an excellent choice. I won't even attempt to explain the complexness of this film. It's got an amazing story line, a great cast, and is very twisted throughout. It makes your brain work to try to figure it out. All in all, it's a great movie that I highly recommend seeing.

Wake up. You help create your own reality. You are responsible for your choices, so pay attention. Choose carefully and deliberately. Be in integrity. You can live your life as a hellish nightmare if you don't pay attention or you can create something satisfying and authentic if you face the present moment. This movie was a mind blower. Let go; take it in; and let it affect you on a subconscious level.

Almost unimaginably bad. I love Rush and watched it on his recommendation. Perhaps he was still deaf when he watched this and temporarily afflicted with blindness as well. Truly a gawdawful movie. Bizzare story which is to movies what modern art is to art. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I had a headache after watching this movie, u should not have to watch a movie 3 times just to understand what is going on. I would not reccommend it to anyone. I'm not to happy with Tom Cruise's choice of roles anymore, it was just as bad as Eyes Wide Shut.

If you like cookie cutter predictable movies this one is not for you. Otherwise, enjoy the ride.

i loved this movie. you have to let yourself go and just watch it. don't get cought up in in trying to rationalize every little detail. to use a theater term, it's a momentary suspension of disbelief. i take away something new everytime i watch it.
