This movie is about the battle of Isandlhwana fought January 22, 1879 between British forces and the Zulu people of South Africa. This action preceded a defense by 148 British soldiers at Rorke's Drift which was depicted in the excellent movie Zulu with Michael Caine made in 1965. Made approximately 10 years later it is truer to the events with some minor historical liberties but it is I believe one of the best action/historical movies ever made. It's somewhat slow start takes off later and you get a very real sense of the battle, the mistakes made and the character of both sides. Highly recommended.

ZULU DAWN was produced without the big studio budget of ZULU. However, this film does its best to show the political factions on both British and Zulu sides. Unlike some of the big Hollywood movies about famous (and obscure) battles, ZULU DAWN tries to present a more well-rounded aspect by giving the Zulus the respect they deserve. (The actor who plays Cateswayo, the Zulu chief, in ZULU DAWN also played a Zulu warrior in ZULU.) When first released on video in the mid-80s, the audio was quite poor. Hopefully, this has been resolved on the DVD. Well-acted, well-directed, and the battle scene is thrilling, history buffs and military buffs are bound to enjoy this.
