Overview

Fascism: A Warning by Madeleine Albright

#1 New York Times Bestseller

A personal and urgent examination of Fascism in the twentieth century and how its legacy shapes today’s world, written by one of America’s most admired public servants, the first woman to serve as U.S. secretary of state

A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, “is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.”

The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions dead. Given the horrors of that experience, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning, Madeleine Albright draws on her experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that assumption.

Fascism, as she shows, not only endured through the twentieth century but now presents a more virulent threat to peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II.  The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse.  The United States, which historically championed the free world, is led by a president who exacerbates division and heaps scorn on democratic institutions.  In many countries, economic, technological, and cultural factors are weakening the political center and empowering the extremes of right and left.  Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s.

Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times.  Written  by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.

Dear Barnes & Noble, please only allow verified book purchasers to be able to write reviews. I've noticed way too many one star ratings for this book that I'm sure are not from people who actually read this book. They're just Republicans that want to assure the writer gets a low rating. How childish some people can be! I, on the other hand, did purchase this book and DID read it. It was an enlightening book and a wake-up call for all Americans who truly believe in our very fragile democracy and want it to stay a democracy.

Important read for Americans interested in freedom and would only be disparaged by those whom it targets.

I read the book and think it should be read in every school in the United States. Fake news, lying, has been around forever. I think our current problem is gullibility because we do not teach and do not encourage thinking, questioning, or the inevitability of change. We are suppose to learn from the failures of the past and not repeat them. This is a really good history book.

This is a great book by a great lady of impeccable character.! An historical context of the current state of affairs in this country is vitally important. Facism is alive in this administration and it is terrifying!

Decades of study and experience coalesce into an examination of the forces behind the rise of anti-democracy movements. From ideolgies, to the complicity of conservative elites, to the apathy of regular people - Albright describes the conditions that facilitate the rise of fascism. Chilling.

Madeline Albright is one of Americas most enlightened scholars in the field of diplomacy and she is warning us that history is repeating itself anf Fascisim can happen here if we dont look back and study how Fascim took root in Europe and elswhere which caused millions deaths. Her style of writing is clear and focused and is a page turner.

I learned so much while reading and rereading this book. One thing I learned was not to blame others but to read with an open mind and heart and then look at what part I play in all of this. I can't change our president's behavior or thoughts, but I can work to prevent it from happening again by becoming more involved. Factual and very honestly written. Too much for me to absorb all in one reading. I will read it again and take notes the second time! I know undersand so much more about what is happening in the world and especially in Washington today. Thanks to all of you who helped make this book possible! It is wonderful! Diana E.

Just reading the sample made me want to read more. For those that gave low rating has to be the ones with their eyes closed. Looking to the right is not always right. This book should be a must read in our schools. It’s history !

I have only read the preview but so far it's chilling. Her grasp of and ability to convey history is remarkable. As I was reading about Mussolini's ascendancy to power in Italy, I was seeing all these similarities to Trump's attempt to tear down the institutions of our Democracy. I have seen the concentration camps, I have seen what humans can do to each other in the name of superiority. I have felt the screams of the victims of that inhumanity. I DON'T want that to happen here. If you don't read this book for insight, read something! Be aware and help keep our Republic on the right path.

Like the author's other books, this one is written in a simple, direct style and covers a lot of history. She is uniquely qualified to help us all understand what could happen in these scary times.

Madeleine Albright's experience and wisdom inform us today. Great work! Sad that three people felt it necessary to post political (and one anti-Semitic) reviews.

If you're wondering how a corrupt deviant like Trump can squeak out a win, albeit an electoral win....read Albright's book. Frightening how close we are to losing our great country to this tyrant. As disturbing as the truth is, I choose to know and meet this evil head on.

Outstanding book written by a brilliant woman. This book should be read by every American and be mandatory for high school and college students. Ms. Albright writes in a clear and precise manner. The information and historical facts are right on the mark. After reading the book, it makes you stop and worry about the direction are country is headed. It is history repeating itself.

Heady yet wonderfully readable. ‘Experience is dear school, but a fool will learn in no other.’ I hope our fool learns without sacrificing the nation’s people. Thank you, Madame Secretary, for being you.

It is an amazing book that is a must read for anyone interested in history. Dr. Albright walks us through the history of fascism and gives us a clear definition. She then explains why she thinks Kim Jong-Un is currently a true fascist. We learn about dictators such as Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin and Nicolas Maduro and dictator wanna-bes' such as Reyep Erdogan and Victor Orban. These men in an expanding club would turn into fascists given a chance. Then there is Donald Trump who loves these men and wishes he was one of them. Very well written and thought provoking.

This book was a real eye opener. Madeline Albright has had experiences that most of us can only dream of. Her explanations of the way that things happened in history were clear and concise and I was shocked to see so many parallels to the current president. So many people were fooled by the likes of Hitler, Mussolini and other tyrants. It scares me to see all of the parallels of what happened then and what is happening today. As Albright explained in her book, fascists have the same mindset , the same traits, the same vocabulary, the same ego mania. Every American ought to read this book. Simply amazing.
