Overview

Like the instant classic The Last American Man, Fearless is the story of a remarkable individual who accepts no personal limits—including fear. Freya Hoffmeister, a forty-six-year-old former sky diver, gymnast, marksman, and Miss Germany contestant, left her twelve-year-old son behind to paddle alone and unsupported around Australia—a year-long adventure that virtually every expert guaranteed would get her killed. She planned not only to survive the 9,420-mile trip through huge, shark-infested seas, but to do it faster than the only other paddler who did it. As journalist and expert kayaker Joe Glickman details the voyage of this Teutonic force of nature, he captures interminable days on the water and nights camped out on deserted islands; hair-raising encounters with crocs and great white sharks; and the daring 300-mile open-ocean crossing that shaved three weeks off her trip. For 332 days Glickman followed Freya's journey on her blog—along with a far-flung audience of awestruck, even lovesick, groupies—as she took on one terrifying ordeal after the next. In the end, he says, "her vanity and pigheadedness paled next to her nearly superhuman ability to master fear and persevere."

I would give this 5 stars if Freya could tell a better story. If it wasn't for Joe Glickman's humor this book wouldn't be worth reading. Freya is more in love with her image and her body than telling a story worth reading. Which is hard to believe of someone who relies on sponsors for these adventures. Once you past Freya's love of herself it is an interesting story that Glickman does a great job of telling.

Himself an experienced paddler, Glickman elevates this book from a dry day by day description of Freya's kayak around Australia to a more in-depth character study... and Freya makes an interesting subject. Unfortunately, as it's not a firsthand account of the circumnavigation, there is little information on the characters she met along the way. I plan to read Paul Caffyn's self-published book detailing his own circumnavigation. The comparison will be interesting.

First things first; I'm not exactly the most objective reviewer, since I'm the author's brother. That said, you should know this is an unsolicited review, that I initiated after finishing Fearless in two big gulps (I'd read the first two chapters pre-publication, but only got my hands on the full book a few days ago and couldn't put it down.) I'm happy and proud to say Fearless is a great read, right up there among the best-ever "adventure/travel" books I've read, such as Endurance and Into Thin. And I'd be surprised if Fearless is not the best kayaking adventure book ever written. So what makes the book so good? Essentially two things: one, Freya's trip is truly an amazing physical accomplishment, whether male or female. And it may be one of the most impressive feats of physical endurance by any woman ever (I say that with some hesitancy as I'm no expert on female adventurers or athletes, but certainly I can't think of anything else that comes close. As one climber of Mount Everest notes in Fearless, climbing Everest is a walk in the park compared to circling Australia in a kayak). Of course I'd heard Joe talk about Freya's amazing trip many times, but the full impact of just how hard it was didn't hit me until I read this book. Even with all her skill and mental toughness, she's still very lucky to be alive. The second reason is Joe's skill as a writer. Now, as noted, I'm not an unbiased reader, so for some evidence I will point out that Joe has been published in the top outdoor magazines (such as Outside, National Geographic Travel, and Men's Journal) and he had a regular column in the New York Times. He's also the best storyteller I know personally, able to turn a everyday trip on the subway into a tale that has you laughing out loud. Okay, occasionally his subway stories fall flat, but none do in Fearless. A big reason it's tone perfect is that Joe is - to use a term he likes - a waterman. He has logged thousands of miles himself in the kayak, even paddling from Montana to New York one summer. That means not only that he understands Freya's difficulties better than just about anyone, he has a passion for her outing, and knows the history and lore of paddlers. Plus, he did tons of research to flesh out and add depth to sense of place and culture. In short, passion + first-rate writer + good material = great read. I could go on, but I'm concerned some readers will doubt my objectivity and boo me off the page. So I'll say this, discount my praise 10%, even 30% and you'll still have a book you won't want to put down. My only caveat is, as befitting a book about seafarers, be forewarned there is a decent amount of four letter words in Fearless. It's appropriate and typically delivered with good humor, but if you're sensitive to the f-bomb, you may not want to proceed. Otherwise, to quote Delmar after his baptism in O Brother Where Art Thou, "Come on in boys, the water is fine!"
