Francis and Edith Schaeffer

by Louis Gifford Gifford Parkhurst, L. G. Parkhurst

Challenging a world of doubters

During the tumultuous years following World War II, Francis and Edith Schaeffer set out for Europe as missionaries. There in Switzerland in 1955 they founded L'Abri Fellowship, a refuge and study center for people seeking to understand the meaning of life. The world-renowned ministry of the Schaeffer's at L'Abri provided answers both to weighty intellectual doubts and the everyday challenges of the Christian life. Through the witness of transformed lives, answered prayer and honest answers to honest questions, the Schaeffers helped young people from diverse cultures and religions grasp the reality o God's existence. Since Dr. Schaeffer's death in 1984, Edith has continued ministering around the world as a missionary, speaker, and writer.

The inspiring story of how God worked through both strength and weakness to enlighten and transform a whole generation of Christians

In September 2012, I published a revised and expanded Nook edition of this book. This expanded edition contains a revised and expanded "Message" section from my first biography on Francis Schaeffer; which was, Francis Schaeffer: the Man and His Message. This expanded edition also includes a section on 10 of the lessons I learned from Francis and Edith Schaeffer. These 10 lessons are: Lesson 1. Teach the Truth in Love Lesson 2. There is Only One Reason to be a Christian Lesson 3. The Bible is True in All that it Affirms Lesson 4. Go First to Establish a Bible-Believing Church and Second a Denominational Church Lesson 5. A Church Without Discipline or the Ability to Discipline Ceases to be a Church Lesson 6. God is Not Mechanical, but Personal. God is the Infinite/Personal God Lesson 7. No One Becomes a Christian Apart From the Work of the Holy Spirit Lesson 8. Pray for the People of the Lord’s Choice to Come, Pray for Him to Keep the Others Away. Pray for the Lord to Meet Your Needs Without Asking for Money Lesson 9. If Your Choice is Between Perfection and Nothing, You Will Always Have Nothing. Do Not Expect a Perfect Church, Pastor, Elder, People, Thing, or Situation in This Fallen World in Which We Live Lesson 10. “God Calls Some to Leave, and Some to Stay, and I Am Not The Holy Spirit.” If you are interested in learning more about prayer from their lives and teaching, you might be interested in: How God Teaches Us to Pray: Lessons from the Lives of Francis and Edith Schaeffer, which is also a Nook Edition. I hope you will find this information helpful. This seemed to be the best place to use to inform readers interested in Francis and Edith Schaeffer. L.G. Parkhurst, Jr.
