You just can't keep a good girl down . . . unless you use the proper methods.

Piper McCloud can fly. Just like that. Easy as pie.

Sure, she hasn't mastered reverse propulsion and her turns are kind of sloppy, but she's real good at loop-the-loops.

Problem is, the good folk of Lowland County are afraid of Piper. And her ma's at her wit's end. So it seems only fitting that she leave her parents' farm to attend a top-secret, maximum-security school for kids with exceptional abilities.

School is great at first with a bunch of new friends whose skills range from super-strength to super-genius. (Plus all the homemade apple pie she can eat!) But Piper is special, even among the special. And there are consequences.

Consequences too dire to talk about. Too crazy to consider. And too dangerous to ignore.

At turns exhilarating and terrifying, Victoria Forester's debut novel has been praised by Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight saga, as "the oddest/sweetest mix of Little House on the Prairie and X-Men...Prepare to have your heart warmed." The Girl Who Could Fly is an unforgettable story of defiance and courage about an irrepressible heroine who can, who will, who must . . . fly.

About the Author

Victoria Forester is a successful screenwriter, and originally wrote The Girl Who Could Fly for film. She liked the story so much that she decided to expand it into her first book. Read an Excerpt

Piper decided to jump of the roof. It wasn’t a rash decision on her part.
This was her plan—climb to the top of the roof and pick up speed by running from one end all the way to the other.
Jump off. Finally, and most importantly, don’t fall.
She didn’t make plans in the event that she did fall, because if you jump off the roof of your house and land on your head, you really don’t need any plans from that point on. Even Piper knew that.
So that’s what she did. She jumped clean off her roof.
But before we get to what happens next, you’ll probably need to know a thing or two about a thing or two. . . .

Discussion Questions

1. Why does the author give Piper the special ability of flying?

What does this skill symbolize in the context of the story?

2. On page 7, Piper tries to confide in her father that she has "an itch"

that she can't get at. What is this itch, and why don't her parents understand?

3. Early in the book, Piper talks about her purpose in life. What is this purpose? What is the purpose for Mr. and Mrs. McCloud?

What about Dr. Hellion?

4. Before Piper leaves for I.N.S.A.N.E., her father presents her with a wooden bird that he carved. What does the bird represent?

5. The school Piper goes to is called I.N.S.A.N.E., the Institute of

Normalcy, Stability, And NonExceptionality. Think about the words that make up the acronym. Do they make up an idea that could be considered insane?

6. After a difficult start at I.N.S.A.N.E., Piper has an easy time making friends with most of the other kids. Why is she more well-liked at

I.N.S.A.N.E. than in Lowland County? How might the other kids at

I.N.S.A.N.E. have been treated at home before they came to

7. Why does Dr. Hellion pay special attention to Piper? Has Piper become a special threat to Dr. Hellion, when the other kids have not?

8. Dr. Hellion talks about her little brother and sister. How has this tragic event in Dr. Hellion's past made her who she is today?

Why wasn't she ever able to accept who she truly is?

9. When Conrad goes from being Conrad Harrington III to just plain Conrad, how does this changes him? Would he have been able to move on with his life if this change never happened?

10. In what ways do the McClouds change Conrad for the better, and in what ways does Conrad change the McClouds?

11. If you could have any super-power like the kids in this book, what

would it be? And how would you use it to help other people?

I enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end. It's very warming and touching. I also very much enjoyed the characters (Piper McCloud). I learned of this book from Stephenie Meyer's website (Author or Twilight Saga), so I took a chance at reading it and she was right, it was very heartfelt and was like Little House and the Prairie meets X-Men, but with a twist. This story is a stellar and I look forward to reading more of Victoria Forrester books (The Girl Who Could Fly is her first book and well worth it); please write more.

Did you know that almost everybody is unique in what they do? Well, I do and I know tons of people who are very special. Even I'm special in something I do! Ever since Piper was just 2 years old she could fly 2 feet in the air. Piper lived in Lowland County. There, she was raised by Mr. and Mrs. McCloud. Betty (Piper's mom) could be nice, could be strict, and cared for Piper's talent. Joey (Piper's dad) was sweet to Piper and Betty, was very responsible and caring, too. One day, Piper was so close to flying off of a 15 foot roof! Dangerous, right? Well, after about a week, a caring lady named Dr. Hellion, who wanted to help Piper, took Piper to a school called I.N.S.A.N.E. - a school for kids that are special and have super powers!!! Piper then had some trouble getting used to the school until she met Bella. Bella is a deeply sweet girl who loves flowers & can do magical things to keep them safe & sound. Finally, Piper realizes that Dr. Hellion is trying to kill the kids by destroying them by giving them drugs from needles. Then, all the kids try to escape as fast as a lightning bolt. Piper & the kids at I.N.S.A.N.E. remind me of my friends who play soccer. Just like the kids at I.N.S.A.N.E. have super powers & are unique my 2 friends are unique too! They both are fantastic at soccer. Also, I am unique for my dancing. I am very unique at dancing!! My favorite dance move is popping. The Girl Who Could Fly is written by: Victoria Forester. Victoria grew up on a remote farm in Ontario, Canada. After graduating from the University of Toronto, her passion for storytelling led her to write & direct a short film was completed for the CBC. Victoria made a film called The Pony's Tale, which aired on Global Television. The famous independent film producer, Roger Corman, mentored Victoria and gave her the opportunity starring Richard Grieco and Corben Bernsen. This was soon followed by Macon County Jail with David Carradine and Ally Sheedy, and Cry of the White Wolf for the Disney Channel. The Girl Who Could Fly began as a screenplay that was optioned by Paramount Pictures. Victoria loved the story so much she decided to write it as a book as well. It is her very first book but she looks forward to the opportunity of writing many, many more. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, newborn daughter and ridiculously orange cat, Rufus. I recommend you to read this book. It will change the ways you feel about things and it will warm your heart life one of grandma's toasty hugs. Do you think that Piper & the kids at I.N.S.A.N.E. can get out & live a successful life? Then, come read The Girl Who Could Fly and see what happens!!

Piper has alway flown. Even as a small child she hovered a few Inches off the ground. Piper is not allowed to go to school. She Is not allowed in the gereral public. Why? Because she can fly. "Its the mark of the devil!" Is what her mom thinks, as well as The whole town. I thought this was an excellent read. It's very easy to read. The characters are very dynamic. You will fall for Piper McCloud. She's original and upbeat. A personality I've never seen before. The storyline is really odd, but interesting at the same time. I thought it was worth the time to read.

I got this book from my school library, because it was an Iowa Childrens Choice book and I thought it looked really good. Was I right? DEFINTLEY YES! It was one of the best books I have ever read. It is about a girl named PiperMcCloud, and she has an extraoridinary talent: she can fly. But when the public finds out, she is sent to I.N.S.A.N.E, an institute for people with talents like her own. She thinks the place is amazing, wich, it kind of is, until she realizes what it is really meant for. Well, I'm not telling you any more, so why don't you read the book?

The Girl Who Could Fly was a great book. I read the book in two days because it was so hard to put down. I wouldn't call the book a life-changing book, but it was a fun, quick-read. I loved the characters, and found them very relatable. I would reccommend this book to people who want a good book with a good story.

I found this in a library and fell in love! I recommend this to everyone and anyone who likes super kids and fantasy will love it, too. If you are a fan of James Patterson's Maximum Ride series, this could be a good starter for you, because in my opinion they are very alike. BUY IT BUY IT!!!!! its so amazing!!!
