After 20 years, Neil Young finally decided to release the sequel to Harvest, his most commercially successful album. Harvest Moon is in some ways a better album, without the orchestral bombast that stifled some of the songs on the first album and boasting a more diverse overall selection of songs. Harvest Moon manages to be sentimental without being sappy, wistful without being nostalgic. The lovely "Unknown Legend," "From Hank to Hendrix," and the beautiful "Harvest Moon" are among Young's best songs. Only the overlong (11 minutes) and oversimplified "Natural Beauty" hurts a beautiful album that proudly displays scars, heartaches, and love.

This album actually surpasses Neil's 1972 Harvest, It seems more relaxed and free flowing than that record. I have read that Young had injured his back just before that album was recorded, and you can sense a stiffness in its music. There are no electric or orchestral tracks on Harvest Moon, giving it a more unified feel than Harvest. It is a good studio companion to Unplugged, recorded shortly after this came out. .

The drone of Neil's masterful country hinged harmonica is but one of several aces in this musical miracle's vast repertoire. He pours it all over Harvest Moon. His voice is always on and evokes a sad beauty into songs on this album. Neil's studio work has always included the best musicans in this genre and Harvest Moon has plenty of them too. Make no mistake though, this is 100% Neil Young at his finest. The album could soothe the soul of a werewolf. If you've ever liked Neil Young then you owe it to yourself to get this CD. Harvest Moon is a classic.

There are no real hits on this CD yet it is a perfect companion to his Classic Harvest album. If you are familiar with the history of Rock you know how difficult it is for any artist to recapture the magic of an album they made in the past, Neil does it here 20 years after the fact. A feat that is as impressive as anything Neil has ever done. It is true that he did not create the kind of hits, or sales, as the Harvest album but it is certainly worthy of both. Now I find it impossible to play Harvest without following it up with Harvest Moon.
