Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen are a perfect match for a musical encounter. Both are tenor saxophonists deeply beholden to swing stylings whose heroes are legends like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, and Lester Young, as well as next-generation progeny including Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Stan Getz. With smooth support from Hamilton’s quartet (including the elegant pianist John Bunch) the two tenors swing through blues, standards, and jazz originals, displaying their idiomatic eloquence. Neither man is out for blood; they try to inspire rather than best one another. Not that the proceedings fail to churn up: Hear “Blues Up and Down” and “Ow!” for great examples of the leader's intense yet melodic blowing, while the ballads (“Warm Valley”) and mid-tempo material (“Did You Call Her Today,” “If Dreams Come True”) bring out the very best in both. In all, a jazz meeting to remember.
