*SENT BY AUTHOR 3.5/5 I literally have no idea why it took me this long to read this. The text for this was small and of course, this was a big paperback. The story was not dragging at all, don't get me wrong. If this had a different font and had some 2.0 spacing, I most likely would have finished this sooner. ANYWAYS- Kitty was probably one of my favorite characters in this book other than Juggler. I thought that the concept was well thought out and I cannot wait until the second book gets released, if there is a second book.

Kay MacLeod has done something very difficult and done it well. She has created a new set of superheroes that have been chosen to protect the world from the invasion of the Tenebri people. If they come they will suck the earth dry destroying the people and all on it. These superheroes, of which there are 10, each have unique gifts passed on to them. The main character is the Archer and just as her name sounds she is a warrior with super archery skills that include enhanced eyesight and a very special bow. The problem is that the 10 heroes are scattered around the kingdom so they must find each other and bond as a team in order to be successful. This is the first in a series but holds it's own as a single read.

Heirs of Power is exciting and vivid! It is packed with fast paced action, magic, and danger! For those who love a good ya story full of adventure and inherent power, this one is for you! I found this one to be very unique and adventurous! I thoroughly enjoyed the idea of the constellations being passed their abilities from their parents because of ancient spirits inhabiting their bodies. It was a new magic system that worked really well with the vivid world that MacLeod built. The writing was vivacious, and the characters were very dynamic. I was quite fond of the fact that each constellation character was different. They weren't all bad-ass teenagers that quickly adjusted to their fates and the dangers thrown in their faces. Each one handled things differently. Each one had their own personality and their own magic about them. With very different backgrounds, MacLeod was able to create a wide range of young adults that each stood out, making their gifts very easy to remember while reading. Though the beginning had me mildly confused with the intense pace, I quickly fell in with the flow and had a fun time at it. There was never a dull moment. The plot had fire and gripped me the entire time. I really loved that the diversity of the characters' backgrounds allowed for several conflicts to arise in the story so that the book stood out from other ya fantasies where all the characters always over power the enemies and never seem to face hardships. The characters were varied enough that they didn't always see eye to eye, which gave the story a little realism and was refreshing. I'd definitely recommend this one to ya fantasy lovers. It was dramatic and unique and had a refreshing complexity to it. I finished it in once sitting and was already craving book 2 by the end. I had the opportunity to read this e-book for free, in exchange for my honest review, after connecting with the author through The Book Robin Hoods site.

Reviewed by Liz Konkel for Readers' Favorite Heirs of Power by Kay MacLeod is the first book in The Constellation Saga. Kitty Fairlow has everything she could want: hunting, protecting those she cares about, the peace of the woods she's always known, and an upcoming wedding to her childhood love. After Kitty and her father discover an ancient ritual, her father reveals the startling truth of their origins. She's one of the ten Constellations, The Archer, a power she inherited from her father. After a lifetime of being hidden, Kitty is drawn into an ancient battle, following a dangerous calling to save the world from the Tenebri, an ancient race escaping into her world. Fighting alongside the proper Dancer and the abrasive Juggler, they're in a race against time to find the other Constellations to prevent the destruction of their world at the hands of the Tenebri. Nothing is as it seems. In a search for Constellations, twists await around every turn and surprises will keep you turning the pages. Heirs of Power is a humorous and dangerous adventure to save the world; a unique spin on magic and the Constellations with teamwork at the heart of the story. Kitty is thrown into this shocking new reality embodying the Constellation of the Archer, and has to learn as she goes. Her journey has humor along the way as she's stuck between two people who can't stand each other. One of the relationships that shines throughout is the friendship that develops between her and Juggler Asher. He's abrasive, snarky, often blunt and rude, while she's more subdued, calm, and always vocal about caring for others. What makes this friendship so special is how Kitty digs deeper and sees that underneath all that is someone caring and loyal. They come to rely on each other and she learns some deeper secrets about him and the Constellations' history. Kitty's primary skills lie in hunting and archery, but she also has a gift for seeing into the hearts of people. This makes her a reliable and empathetic heroine. Kay MacLeod brings these characters to life, layered and flawed, taking ordinary people and turning them into heroes with extraordinary gifts. These are normal people who make mistakes, have flaws, and aren't entirely prepared for the weight of the world, but the journey is one of self-discovery and coming of age. Heirs of Power is a fantastic start to the series, a must-read with danger and tragedy, emotion and heart, and with characters that you'll fall in love with.
