Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)

Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song)

by Warren Zevon

"Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" has several factors of note. It is co-written by sportswriter and Tuesdays With Morrie author Mitch Albom. With two such sharp wits and wordsmiths, you can reasonably expect it to be a wry, literate tune, which it is. It also features backing by The Late Show's CBS Orchestra (formerly the World's Most Dangerous Band), anchored, of course, by Paul Shaffer. He brings along documented Warren Zevon fan David Letterman (or at least a David Letterman sample) to provide the song's tagline. With that information, one could make the reasonable assumption that it's silly and novelty-ish, which is also true. It's not, however, particularly funny, and never quite manages enough sincerity to make it entertaining for more than a single listen. The flipside (from his Artemis debut, Life'll Kill Ya), on the other hand, is considerably more inviting. Despite its goofy title, "For My Next Trick I'll Need a Volunteer" is actually one of Zevon's characteristically sardonic examinations of life and love, with a secretly deep-felt poignancy that sneaks up on you and doesn't let go.
