by Roy Haynes

This live set was recorded for radio in 1992, just a month before Roy Haynes's group would enter the studio and create the wonderful When It's Haynes, It Roars! The drum legend and his young quartet wind their way through six tunes, most of which would remain staples of their repertoire for years. Everyone plays brilliantly on every track, but some of the excitement of the show might have gotten lost in translation to tape. That said, highlights include tenor saxophonist Craig Handy's feature on the ballad "You're Blasé," pianist David Kikoski's blistering stop-time choruses on John Coltrane's "Equinox," and bassist Ed Howard's trading with Haynes on the same track. There are also good versions of Thelonius Monk's "Green Chimneys," Chick Corea's "Bud Powell" and the bop standard "Star Eyes." To close the set, the band plays "Anniversary Song," a traditional melody in 6/8 which would also appear on When It's Haynes, It Roars! with Kikoski on electric piano. Here he plays acoustic.
