Synopsis

The days of the August Saratoga Racecourse meeting are a crossroads for jockey John Batterson, and his fellow jockey and girlfriend, Amber Tomeo. The sunny beginning of the race meeting could bring riches to both of them, yet dark horses and dark days loom large as the two jockeys ride through mid summer at the Spa and into the fall at Belmont Park.

The summer is especially rocky for Batterson’s colleague, Paul DeAngelo, in a deep depression due to rough trips, losing races, a breakup with his girlfriend, and his weight issues - numerous bouts with bulimia and drug addiction continue to plague the young rider.

Paul’s inability to make weight, not only tips the scales for him, but has tragic implications for Batterson as well. The race meeting quickly deteriorates as Paul’s boss, trainer Buddy Crenshaw, is killed by his horse, Urgent Recall, in a twisted plot to kill Paul as well.

Batterson’s sister, Judy, is then accused of killing her husband, and again the scene of the crime is Barn 12, Urgent Recall’s stall. Did the horse kill again or was it Batterson’s sister?

As Judy’s murder trial proceeds, the summer becomes darker for Batterson and his fellow jockeys - their barns are in turmoil, due to injured horses, dead trainers, the mob, and murders that surround them at what is not just another day at the races.

About the Author

Dr. Ed Kane grew up on Long Island, around the racetracks of Belmont Park, Aqueduct, and at nearby Saratoga Racecourse, where this novel is set. His enthusiasm for the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing was advanced during his college years as he worked caring for breeding Thoroughbred racehorses. One of his charges, Obeah, ran very well and her famous daughter, Go For Wand, is buried within the Saratoga Racecourse infield. Ed’s namesake, Trouble Brewing, ran in the 1969 Kentucky Derby.

With his doctoral training in equine physiology and nutrition from the University of Kentucky, Dr. Kane spent his years in Lexington around the breeding farms of Calumet, Claiborne, and Main Chance, assisting breeding stallions, mares and foals. He continued to absorb his passion for horse racing at the Keeneland Racecourse and at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Today Dr. Kane continues with his fascination and appreciation of Thoroughbred racing around the world, writing for several Thoroughbred and veterinary publications, as an amateur handicapper, and noted equine nutritionist.

Dr. Kane launches his novel, “Horseshoe,” of murder and mayhem on the racetrack, with his thorough knowledge of the sport and the activities of horse owners, jockeys, and trainers.
