This book is a great read and I truly enjoyed it. I have read another of Diana’s series and loved it. I picked up this book because of that without a second thought. Berkeley is an Admiral’s daughter. Her whole life has been planned for her by her parents. She finds herself lucky that she got to choose what college she went to and what degree she got. Fresh from college her parents are determined for her to marry the man they have picked for her and start what they believe her life should be. Berkeley doesn’t want to do anyone of that. Then she meets a man named Dare and the restaurant she works at. She turns him down before he can even ask her out. She knows he is military and she has sworn off military guys. After all she doesn’t want to be with the man her parents picked out for her and she has known him her whole life and he is her best friend so why would she choose a completely stranger over him. But, Dare is different and eventually she does give him her number and he doesn’t waste any time using it. Dare has lived a very difficult life. He grew up in the foster care system and joined the military when he turned 18. The men in his unit are the only real family he has had in a long beside a foster brother. He recently got out the military and has to find his way in life after being a Ranger. A fellow military brother invites him to come live with him and work at his garage. When Dare finally caved and took his friend up on his offer he never expected to find the girl who would turn his world upside down. Berkeley took Dare breath away the first time he meet her and he knew then that she gave him a shot everything for him would change. Berkeley’s life is complicated because of her parents. She knows she shouldn’t be hanging out with Dare but for once someone gets her. He does all kinds of things just to make her happy, he isn’t doing things expecting her to react a certain way or to get something for himself. He makes her happy, makes her feel safe and free at the same time. Dare hasn’t shared all of himself with Berkeley yet and knows when he does his secrets could cause problems. Will they be able to make it work? Will Berkeley stand up to her father and fight for her own happiness? This book was great. There was that part in the middle where you are begging them to just take and get over the misunderstanding that happened. They are both hurting so much and if they just talked everything could be resolved and fixed. Berkeley’s friend Grisham kind of annoyed me. I truly believed that he cared for her but the only reason he pushed for more was before of their father’s wanting them to be more. I was made that he was so easily swayed by what their parents wanted and allowed himself to be manipulated and then in turn did the same thing to Berkeley. All the characters in this book were great. I can’t wait for the second book. There is a sneak peek at the end of this one. This book pulled at my heart strings. Dare was so worried that he wasn’t good enough for Berkeley. When in fact he was the only who truly got her besides her friend Mae. Another fantastic job Diana, keep it up. I was given this book in return for an honest review.
Loved it! Diana Gardin doesn't disappoint.
I've always been a sucker for military romances, and Last True Hero is another fantastic one. Dare Connors is an ex-Army Ranger who struggles with haunting memories of the things he's done in the service. But Dare isn't your typical alpha hero. Sure, he's got the whole muscled swoon-worthy vibe going on, but what I really loved about him was his softer side. In fact it was his heart and his willingness to show it that really made him an incredibly memorable character. Berkeley Holtz is the daughter of an Admiral with a list of family expectations that are a mile long. And right at the top of that list is her parents' wish for her to be with their long-time friends' son, Graham. Berkeley may have considered following along with the plan, but after meeting Dare, there's no going back for her. The writing in this book is extremely solid and flows wonderfully. I breezed through it and the steady pace kept me turning the pages. I'll be honest, I was quite a sucker for Graham and I am so, so glad he's getting own book. Cannot wait to get my hands on that one.
Being the Admiral's daughter comes with it's disadvantages and a tall list of expectations to live up to, which is something that Berkeley Holtz faces on a daily basis, and she is fed up with it. She is more than ready to live her life on her own terms, but every time she makes an attempt to do things her way, her parents intervene and take control. They have even found the "perfect" man for her, and expect her to give up her dreams to follow in her mother's footsteps, and become the doting military wife, only Berkeley has no intention of settling down with him. She has set her sights on another soldier, full well knowing her parents will disapprove... Dare Connors days as a Army Ranger are over, and now he forced to figure out what the next step in life for him will be. His haunting combat memories have him in desperate need of a escape from reality, so he welcomes the opportunity to stay at his friends beach side home for a while. He hopes the relaxing environment will give him the reprieve he needs, and quiet all the menacing monsters in his mind. Finding love isn't really on his radar right now, but the minute he sets eyes on a beautiful waitress with golden curls, he begins to think maybe it should be. She has an effect on him that he can't deny, and when he approaches her, he discovers that getting to know her maybe prove to be quite challenging, but it's a mission he is more than capable of winning...
