About the Author

Anne Schraff

Anne Schraff, the author of five books in the Bluford Series, is a full-time writer. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and earned a B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Northridge. Schraff taught high school from 1967 to 1977 at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace, San Diego, California.

As a child, Schraff traveled widely in the United States with her mother, brother, and grandmother. (Her father died when she was three.) They made their journeys in a camping trailer and had many wild adventures. Schraff frequently draws from those rich experiences when she creates her stories.

As a teenager, Schraff held a variety of jobs. She began as a papergirl, delivering a hundred Los Angeles Times every morning at four o’clock. She later became a waitress and a shrimp boat worker. Another job as a boysenberry picker taught Schraff sympathy for migrant workers.

But Schraff always wanted to be a writer and sold her first story, “Stage to Hell,” to a western magazine while she was a college freshman. She pretended to be a male by signing the story A. E. Schraff. The editor didn’t know the truth until he’d bought a dozen of her stories. Since then she has sold hundreds of stories and more than eighty books including historical fiction, biographies, science books, and her favorite, fictional books for young people.

The title of my book is Lost and Found. The author is Anne Schraff. Fiction is the type of genre. Darcy Wills is a sixteen year old girl and the oldest sister. She is friendly, smart, and helpful. Jamee is the little sister she is fourteen years old, two years younger than Darcy. She is smart too, but she has a little attitude. Darcy is the oldest sister and she is always trying to help her little sister. I can identify with her when she is trying to help her sister, but she gets an attitude. That's how I get some times, too! It make me so mad when you try to help someone they and stab you in the back. That's how Darcy feels in this book. Tarah Carson is a fifteen year old girl. She is one of Darcy's new friends. She is smart, funny and likes to joke around a lot. Cooper is a boy another one of new friend's. Cooper is a new friend to Darcy. He is smart, funny and he likes to joke around a lot more than Tarah does. He is also protective of girls. When a girl is getting hurt, he is there to help. Then he beats the guy up. This story takes place in California in the middle of October. Darcy, Jamee, Mattie Wills which is Darcy's and Jamee's Mom and Grandma live in a small apartment. Grandma had a stroke a couple of months ago, and now she lives with them. I think the author is trying to say that teenagers get mad, and they can get glad but, you just have to let them chill a little and/or ask them what is wrong. This story is about courage, caring, and doing the right thing. I learned from the book that if you be nice to people they will be nice back. The problem was that Jamee was missing and they didn't know where she was. The first thing that happened in the story was Darcy was doing an astronomy project and she was paired with a girl named Tarah Carson. The second thing was Darcy overheard a boy named Bobby Wallace who was always in trouble. He was talking to another kid and was saying that Jamee, Darcy's little sister, was steeling CD's for him. After that Darcy's grandma was saying that she was a little girl again because she had a stroke a couple months ago. She was very confused. The fourth thing that happened was Jamee got beat up by Bobby Wallace because Darcy had confronted him about the CD's Jamee had been stealing for him. Then ne day in school there was a threatening note on Darcy's desk. She was scared. Finally, the last thing that happened was there was a man following her everyday. Wherever she was, he was. I thought that the book was a great book and other people should read it and the other Bluford High books. I liked the whole book, but mostly the last two chapters were exciting. I disliked the little sister's attitude toward her mother, sister, and her aunt. It was hard to believe that it was happening to her. The story was a little predictable. I would give the book five stars.

Finally a book that actually takes real life situations and turn them into a book. This is the book for you if your dad left your family, or your grandmother is really sick, or even if you a struggling to find yourself in this world. The book "Lost and Found" tell you like it is, the book doesn't bead around the bush with you at all. You can picture your own self being in the story, feel the emotion in it, and actually enjoy it physical and also mentally. This book in particular is for those kids going through the same thing, especially if they do not know what to do. I recommend to every reader to read every single book in the Bluford Series!!!

I just gave the Bluford set as a holiday gift. The publisher sells them at a great price - $1/book. I figured I better read the first one to experience the series first-hand. Darcy is the oldest child trying to hold her family together and figure out who she is and wants to be. When she is paired with a partner in science class who she deems dumb and low-class, she is in for an eyeopening experience. She and her younger sister deal with their grandma's illness and their dad's abandoment and reappearance in very different ways. A touching, quick read that left me wanting to know more about the kids at Bluford High.

I wanted to like Lost and Found---I really did. The entire Blueford series is wildly popular with teens and I loved The Bully, one of the Bluford boy books, but i was disappointed with Schraff's work. HIghschool student, Darcy Willis, has some problems. Her Dad abandoned the family and hasn't been seen in years, her mother struggles financially and works very long hours as a nurse to make ends meet; she is tired and distracted. Darcy's grandmother had a stroke and now lives with them--paralyzed and unable to talk--needing constant care. and Darcy's younger sister, Jamee, deals with her issues by shutting down emotionally, pushing away everyone who loves her, and acting out at home and in school with lots of at risk behavior. Darcy is smart and studies hard and does well academically, but she is lonely and doesn't make friends easily and acts superior to her peers--partially to hide her shyness. Things get mysterious and even ominous when, for a class project, Darcy is paired with 2 students who have bad reputations. A stranger begins to follow her and then her sister disappears. Darcy must put the pieces together to save herself and her family. The book, like the others in the series, has lots to recommend it--relatively short, easy middle reader with Black characters and urban settings and typical kid problems and situations--Darcy's life seems very real to me. The problem with Lost and Found, i thought, was not only the predicable ending, but also that it sends a poor message to girls; Darcy learns that if you stop being stuck up and stop thinking that you are better than your lower achieving peers, then a boy and his male friends will beat up a male bully who is threatening you, and your father will comeback into your life and save your sister. i was really disappointed --especially since i really loved The Bully and it's very positive and realistic storyline. Unfortunately, i cannot say the same for Lost and Found; it sends a bad message to teen girls and I cannot recommend it.

As if Darcy doesn¿t have enough on her plate dealing with high school and an absent father, now she is being stalked by a stranger who may not be so strange after all. This book is fast-paced, focusing more on moving the story forward than on getting bogged down in details. The end winds up being so drastically different than what one would expect in the beginning, it almost feels like the reader has completed an entire series in just over a hundred pages. This format will appeal to some¿fast-paced, teenagers dealing with the same issues they are, an end that magically works out for everyone. These readers will enjoy seeing their own lives in the pages, wondering how things will work out for the characters (and, perhaps, in their own lives), and thrilling when everything does. However, it will turn off others¿lack of details, lives that are mundane when not contrived. The teens in the stories live ordinary lives until something so unusual happens¿a stalker? The return of an absent but loving father? Does this really happen?¿it stretches the imagination.

Lost and Found, published in 2007, is the first book in the Bluford High series. The book centers on Darcy Willis. Darcy has a busy single mother who works odd hours at the hospital and a sister with a serious attitude. Darcy, unlike her sister, does the right thing. She finds herself paired with Tarah, a girl whom Darcy sees as "beneath" her. Gradually she finds herself growing closer to Tarah and another young man, Cooper. Things get dicey when a mysterious man begins to follow Tarah and the identity of the stranger is a shock to both Darcy and her sister.Lost and Found is a story with a strong moral message about getting to know people before you judge them and about never giving up on people; even when they have let you down. The Bluford High series as a whole focuses on some issues relevant to young African-Americans and would be great books for reluctant readers. Students in middle and early high school would be the best demographic to recommend these books to.

A Novel You Should Read! This book is very exciting and mysterious I think everyone should read because it’s talking about an everyday life series of things that happens in this world today. My most favorite character will be Darcy Willis one of the main characters she over goes a number of things dealing with her grandmother who is very ill, her mother who is working multiple jobs to take care of them, and a father who hasn’t been there any of her life. The books starts off pretty good but once your deep into reading it you wouldn’t want to stop because you would want to know what else is going to happen. I think the author’s point she is trying to get across is no matter what the situation is talk to someone before taking the actions into your own hands.
