Miss Congeniality

Miss Congeniality

In the film Miss Congeniality, Sandra Bullock plays a tomboy FBI agent who goes undercover in a beauty pageant to track down a serial bomber threatening the contest. Not surprisingly, the accompanying soundtrack is packed with enough grooves to make any swimsuit contestant strut down the runway with her head held high. Highlights include Groove Armada's highly infectious acid-house "If Everybody Looked the Same" and Tom Jones teaming with remixer BT to give Paul Anka's "She's a Lady" a Fatboy Slim-like face-lift. Elsewhere, William Shatner (!) steps out of his role as a self-absorbed pageant official to deliver the contest's theme, "Miss United States," which sounds like a latter-day cousin to Todd Terry's remix of Everything but the Girl's global hit "Missing." Other musical contestants making the semi-finals are the A Teens, who graft a Portishead beat to ABBA's "Dancing Queen," the Baha Men, who toss in the hands-in-the-air anthem "Get Ya Party On," and Swede Bosson, who proffers the Marc Anthony-esque "One in a Million." Cuts by Tex-Mex rockers Los Lobos (a slinky "Mustang Sally") and rockabilly songsters Southern Culture on the Skids (the Farfisa organ and Texicali horn-driven "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down") provide a welcome break from the thumping runway beats.
