I am addicted to this series. If there was a way to get me to read a graphic novel again after 20 years: 1) Have an Asian American woman write it, 2) have an Asian woman draw it, 3) make it more about women, less about men, 4) have a cursing cat that curses just as much as I do, and 5) put cute little half human/half animal characters in it. I loved Volume 1 so much, I ordered Volumes 2 and 3. I even pre-ordered Vol. 4. I am a huge Superman fan, but Monstress...this graphic novel is everything I could ever ask for in turning me into a new fan of graphic novels. Just an amazing series.

I could not put this down! I am completely immersed in this world and totally engaged with these characters. Maika is really fleshing out in this volume, and more of the world is being built. The world building in this story is vicious, and I love how Professor Tam Tam is presenting it at the end of each chapter in a humorous way. The story is brutal, but also hopeful at the same time. All the characters are looking to survive, and I love how the story is exploring how survival can take many shapes and forms for those who are willing to survive at all costs and those who want to keep their humanity. I cannot wait for the next volume!

This second volume digs into Maika’s backstory more as she tries to discover the secrets of her past, including details about her mother. We discover quite a lot in this installment about how and why Maika came to be. This volume is just as savage as the first, but I think I liked the overall story even more since we got some answers about Maika and the world she inhabits. I give this one 4.5/5 Stars.

Liu & Takeda deliver another fantastic Manga/fantasy mash-up with an amazing female-centric cast. The mysteries of this world are intense. The lore that Liu is creating here is great. She does a great job of world building and Maika, the lead character, is phenomenal. The book keeps adding characters, which is daunting as a reader but they're all done well. The art by Takeda is spectacular. I can imagine its not for everyone but I think its a perfect fit for this title. Great stuff!

Maika has a monster living inside her and she and her two travelling companions / allies travel to the Isle of Bones, seeking answers. There are various leaders and factions vying for power and, to be honest, it is not always clear what is going on. Lots of different characters appear in all sorts of shapes and sizes. On the other hand, it is beautifully illustrated and worth reading just for the artwork, even if the story can confuse. Reading Volume 1 will certainly help and there is more to come
