Moods finds Neil Diamond attempting to craft a more ambitious and substantial album than his usual pop record through heavy orchestration, but the results only work when he sticks to catchy pop-rock, as on "Song Sung Blue," "High Rolling Man," and "Play Me."

I first bought this albumn sometime in the 70's as an LP, then again in the 90's as a cassette, and in 2003 as a CD. This is one of a handful of albumns that I have found worthwhile to purchase again (and once more) to keep up with technology. I've belted out the songs along with Neil, danced in my bellbottoms with my babies, and cried with the music over the years; it is as much a part of me as the old avacado green scratched up pot I still use to make spaghetti. "Moods" is such an appropriate title because there are fun, whimsical songs like "Porcupine Pie" and some pop songs like "Song Sung Blue", but the very BEST of this collection are slightly heavier (i.e., moodier) tunes, "Captain Sunshine", "Walks on Water", "Play Me" etc. After all these years of listening, guess it's fair to say I'll never tire of replaying this timeless classic. While I have significantly broadened my taste in music over the years...I keep coming back to this one, it's like comfort food!!
